What kind of hit will I take upgrading/downgrading a Onkyo sr805 to a sr508

Bought the 805 four years ago. Excellent receiver but not enough hdmi inputs. Plus, it takes some finagling to get 1080p 24 working. And I don't care if it is thx certified.

The 805 was overkill for what I needed, I just don't know if swapping to a 508 is worth it. Will there be a huge sound or picture hit? or since the 508 is 3 years newer, sound quality might be equal if not better?

The 805 cost me $700-$800 back in the day, the 508 is $250. Thinking I can easily sell the former to pay for the latter.

If it helps, it all feeds to an Epson 8350 throwing 132".

Definitely a downgrade I would not do. If you need more HDMI inputs, simply purchase a HDMI switcher at Monoprice or Radio Shack. You should be able to procure a 4 HDMI switcher with remote for less than $50.

I can always switch cables, I guess by biggest challenge is getting the 1080P handshake to work with my blu ray player and 360. It takes a combination of turning stuff on an off and unplugging the cables before I can get the handshake just right. I might have a solution though.

I purchased a powered 4x2 matrix HDMI splitter from monoprice a few months ago. I was using it to send the signal downstairs to another room. Theoretically, I could make my projector out 1 and the receiver out 2. Then I would have the video going straight to the projector and the audio going straight to the receiver and bam! Video passthrough.

We'll see. It might actually be more of a HDMI handshake headache but it is worth a shot.

The 805 is a pain to deal with it's true, it's hand shake system is pretty outdated and fails spectacularly on many occasions.

I must be lucky because i've never had an issue with the hdmi on my 805. Works flawlessly with my kuro, PS3, laptops, and WD live plus.

The 508 is much weaker. If you have hard to drive speakers or like to listen/watch at high volume, it would be a bad switch.

You should look at getting a refurbed TX-SR707 or something similar.

The 508 won't be as good in the sound quality department, but it would be good enough for those speakers. If you can do the swap for nothing out of pocket and it makes your life easier, I'd go for it.

My budget is $200-$250. Is the 508 my best bet or is something outside of Onkyo better?

I need at least 4 hdmi inputs, preferably 1.4
Up conversion is nice but not a must have
7.1 is a must
3D for future proofing

For $250, the Onkyo is good. You could also wait for the 509 to drop in price if you want the network stuff that's new this year.

509 is 5.1 though, I'd have to get the 609.

I don't know why it matters to me, just irks me have the speakers wall mounted and not use them. Guess I could turn them into extra surrounds.

I'm kind of digging the rc260. Looks like I need to cough of another Benjamin though.

Picked up a rc360 which was oddly enough only $40 more than the 260. It will be here Thursday.

I upgraded my hd70 projector a couple weeks ago to 8350. I donated the other one with an extra bulb to our local film society. They might have a receiver upgrade in their future. I get some awesome donation receipts for them though and I help out a local non profit in the process. Win win.

So, I've had the rc360 for a week. The 804 sounded much better.you figure after 4 years, audio quality on the upper low range receivers would have caught up to the upper medium range receivers, but no dice. The 804 sounds better, hits harder, night and day really.

nonetheless

Rc360

Pros:

Tons of hdmi inputs
1080p24
Nice osd
iPad remote app
Can upgrade firmware over network

Cons:

Sound quality not comparable to the trusty TX-sr804
Lip sync issue that is a pain to resolve

So, many more pros than cons and just enough to make me enjoy the rc360.
