What kind of headphones do you use?

I am most likely going to be getting a 4g iPod and trying to decide whether to stick with the earbuds or upgrade to nicer phones. Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on what you use and why.

I have used those Sony's and they give good sound quality.
I wouldn't ever buy any because I don't like Sony, Panasonnic all the way.

I'd go with those Sony's. Or you could look at musiciansfriends.com. They've got a lot of really nice pairs that they sell for studio monitoring and stuff like that that are heavy duty.

Out of curiosity, what would happen if you hooked up big cans (like, say, sennheiser 280s) to a portable mp3 player? Would you get very little volume? fast battery drain?

It's just like hooking up a car-kit for your cd-player. You put the volume at a certain level (about midway up) and then use the controls of the stereo. But in your situation, since I'm guessing there aren't controls on the individual speakers, you should get loud sound. It shouldn't be only one set volume, otherwise when you use weak headphones as opposed to nice headphones there'd be no difference and no reason in spending the extra money.

yea i'm kinda leaning towards getting a set of cans. i like to listen to a lot of hip hop, and trip hop, so decent bass is a must. are there cans made for portability? i've seen the sennheiser 200's but they don't look to appealings for some reason.

I use these with my Nomad Zen NX, and they are 100x better than the OEM earbuds.

I thought about picking up those to replace my stock Ipod earbuds but wasn't sure if they were worth the $40 or not. That's a lot of money for earbuds. Koss had some similar ones for $20 called "the plug" or something to that extent. I had heard some people talk about those as well as the Sennheiser MX400/500's. Without knowing somebody with them...and even then that's kind of gross...it's hard to try them before you buy them.

the sennheiser 400/500 have the foam padding for them, those are rough on your ears imo and get dirty easily. hehe.

how are they with drowning out outside noise?

It depends on how loud you have them.

They are good at containing their sound, though. I've never had an earbud that was as "isolated" as these are.
