What kind of guitar should I get?

You've heard they are expensive? Why are you getting a guitar? To play, or just to have and be able to say you have a guitar? Any musician would know that a Gibson is expensive...

acoustic or electric? can you actually play one? my roommate got a faded gibson and it was $500, roughly 1/2 to 1/3 other gibsons.

Gibsons and Fenders aren't really "first guitars". They do however have their value brands... Gibson has Epiphone and Fender has Fender Squier, and those are inexpensive but still decent quality instruments. I recommend you go with an Epiphone.. perhaps a Les Paul. It has great sound and won't break the bank.
