So I was going through some of my things, and found quite a bit of old computer hardware. I would like to use some of this to build a PC for old games.

I do have memory to go go along with whatever motherboard I use and other items as well.

I plan on using Windows XP Professional. And I know I have a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP sitting around here somewhere as well.

What would you use ?

Here is a list of what I found.

Motherboards

That Abit board would be a good start, and you can pick up an X2 3800+ 939 chip on Ebay for $30. I'd pair that with the 7900 card and call it a good start. Only concern is whether the Abit board still works - check the board's capacitors closely and look for signs of bulging or leaking.

Most of these parts are from or around 2002-2004. I'd go with the above post and play games released around 2003-2005 (at the latest).

My first gamer was a pentium 4 with a 6200le,that card got me playing BF2 back in 2006.

Seems if the Op decides on a x2 chip and that 7900gtx,he already will have a good BF2 gaming pc.

Some of the older unreal tournament games would be fun as well.

Yeah, those aren't too bad of specs to really work with. Even games from only a few years ago would be able to play on some decent settings, like Company of Heroes, all of the HL2 / source games (at least mostly? CS and DOD:S would work no problem).

I'm trying to think of other games around 2003-2005, but I really just played dods through that time.... How about something like the original supreme commander, BF series (2 and 2142), doom 3...

XP 2500
7900GTX
ABIT board
Good luck

The 7900 card is PCIe, the Abit board that works with the 2500 chip is AGP. Not gonna work.

If you meant the Abit 939 board instead of the Socket A, then the XP 2500 chip won't fit in that 939 socket.

In the interest of trying to keep it as modern a build as possible, I'm still going with the Abit PCIe board and the dual core X2 3800 for $30. It will smoke that poor XP2500 chip in every way imaginable.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if that rig could run every modern warfare game, right up to modern warfare 3, straight up maxed out at 1024x768. I'd try at least since that game runs maxed on an 8800GT at 1920x1200. (OK with this one I am hating on MW games)

Don't forget the awesomeness of C&C Generals (zero hour especially). I known that game will run perfect and other C&C games.

Team fortress 2 will run just fine at lower res and settings.

Stalker! Got to play that.

Go to gamespot and look at game reviews from the same year your card was released.

As a matter of fact, I have all of those games you mentioned. :)

As well as about 122 others pre 2007

Accordign to passmark a 7900GTX is about the same as a 4670 or a llano A8. But I think it has a lot more raw DX9 power. The problem you're going to have is that whatever you build is going to pull 335 watts from the wall and only game about as well as a 35 watt trinity notebook... It will not take long for those 300 watts to cost you, especially in the summertime. You're looking at more than 5 cents an hour to run that thing in an air conditioned room. Maybe 6 or 7 cents.

The power draw is of no concern to me. :)

One game I know it will run is Grim Fandango. I love that game. Hard as hell to get it to run on Windows 7 though. It ran on XP when I ran that years ago though. I have the Command @ Conquer The First Decade. So will be running those on there as well. So yea, any game that is more or less "incompatible" with Windows 7 or 8...will go on this machine.

Ill be using the Abit AN8 board with the 7900GTX. Of course, I plan on getting the fastest Socket A cpu I can find....and pair it with the 9800 Pro for a old AGP system as well.

Play through the Far Cry campaign.
Yep. Got Far Cry as well. An original copy from release day in a mint box. :)

I remember when I first installed that with a 9800 Pro. I couldn't believe how good it looked. Was mind blowing at the time.

Should be able to run Doom 3 and Prey also. Arnt they both based on the same engine ?

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. I just have soooooo many games I never got around to. Chronicles Of Riddick Escape From Butcher Bay and the list goes on and on.
