ALLENDALE, N.J. -- Officials at Northern Highlands Regional High School
are investigating reports that girls on the field hockey team were
subjected to hazing by their teammates.
Superintendent Robert McGuire said more than a dozen seniors on the team
may have been involved in the incidents, which reportedly happened en
route to and at East Coast Field Hockey Camp in Estella, Pa. between
July 30 and Aug. 3.
"We're certain now that many things did occur that shouldn't have,"
McGuire told The Record of Hackensack for Monday's editions. "We don't
consider this the type of behavior any of our kids should be subjected
to, in school or out of school. We certainly will be dealing with it."
The mother of one of the alleged victims said about a dozen sophomores
on the team were locked inside a bus bathroom, forced to eat jalapeno
peppers or fireball candy while their mouths were covered with tape and
wear dog collars and leashes.
The mother said the hazing was videotaped.
She said the girls were forced to wear thong bikinis over their shorts,
along with dog collars and leashes. There, they were directed to climb
onto tables and bark like dogs. They were also told to go to the counter
and say, "I'm a slut. Give me a cheeseburger," the mother said.
At the camp, the mother said, they were forced to practice with eggs
smashed in their bras, jelly in their socks and maple syrup down their
shorts.
They were also ordered to simulate oral sex on a banana.
Sophomores were not allowed to call home unless she had a senior
standing nearby.
"It was demoralizing. It was evil. It was deviant behavior," the mother
told The Record on the condition of anonymity.
None of the girls involved were injured, the mother said.
The team has been practicing since Aug. 25. The mother who spoke with
The Record said her daughter might not stick with the team -- depending
on what discipline plan is prescribed.
"I don't want my child to be around people like this," she said. "If
something to my satisfaction is not done, she will be removed from the
team."
