What kind of fan fits on a Voodoo 3?

most fans will fit it if you know hot to mount it and have enough space in the available slots.

I'm using a YSTECH 60x60x25mm fan on it now with arctic silver and it's working great after some probs were sorted out :)

I lost 2 pci slots though... :(

how did I mount it? I'm using 4,1.5diameter rubberbands to mount it, by looping them through the mounting holes on the fam. The v3 has a large heatsink with the ends raised so wraping the rubberbands around the hs is no problem. The end result is quiet nice with very nice cooing.

Personally I find the backside of the V3 is the fieriest part of the card, so I just plop a fan down on top of the V3 next to the agp slot and use a little adhesive to make sure the fan doesnt move around if I move the case.

I wouldn't suggest fastening anything in a computer with rubberbands. The heat will eventually melt them.

Why would you need a fan connected to your video card? I don't know much about computers.....

Thesedays, video cards are producing more and more heat. In order to keep the heat down, and not damage your video card or any components, it is a good move to take precautionary measures, which would be installing a cooling device (fan/heatsink) on the video card to cool it. Same concept as fan/heatsinks on your processor or hard drive(s).

I got a Celeron cooler, with this large aluminium heatsink, and a 50-ish mm fan on top.....removed the fan, binned the HS, and tied the fan onto the V3 (3k) heatsink with a piece of string

People, remember that a 2000 and 3000 V3 heatsinks are different (at least for the OEM ones).

The ones I've seen are 40 mm for the 2000 but the 3000's have a very big odd-shaped heatsink that fits a 50 mm fan.

I just ripped off my 40 mm heatsink and stuck on a new 50 mm heatsink fan. It's cheap anyways, just a little more than a fan alone.

A slot cooler will probably be your best way to go. It works really well and you don't have to deal with a hot case as well.

I really wish there was more room between AGP and PCI slots.. well maybe only needed for the first 2 or so slots (between the AGP and first and second PCI slot). that would allow me to put some nice card coolers (probably home made ones) in there, as well as a fairly good fan on the video card...

You can mount a 40mm x 40mm, 50mm x 50mm or a 60mm x 60mm on the stock V3 3000 heatsink. But what really does the trick, is a 3" case fan mounted on it! Oh sure, you lose a PCI slot. But even a good 60mm x 60mm will cost you a PCI slot.

All this is assuming that we're talking about an AGP card.

I have a slim 80mm fan zip-tied to my V3 3K heatsink, and I lose 1 PCI slot on my BH6. I don't think you can get away without losing a PCI slot if you want to put any fan on the V3.

So I just installed a voodoo3 2000 PCI video card in my computer yesterday...does this mean I have to install a fan to it too??

Sort of on this topic....the fan on my Viper 770u died, so I put a slot fan directly below....will this be just as good?

miken12 I'd recommend putting a slot fan next to it or just screwing an old 486 fan on it.

Deeko I've got a Voodoo3 2000 which used to have an old 486 fan on it. I took it off and added a slot fan. The Voodoo3 stays just as cool as it did before and the case temp is actually 1 degree cooler I guess due to better overall air flow.

If you intend to oc it do so. If you want piece of mind, you can do it, too :). In non-oc'd situations the stock heatsink is decent if not glamourous.

If you want to go all out (in either oc'd or non-oc'd instances) and by voiding your warranty ;)), you can take off the retail heatsink and slap on a Lasagna V3 Stealth cooler from http://www.tennmax.com. Great fans, but you get what you pay for. Had my V3 2000 AGP oc'd to 166 and 183 using the Lasagna V3 Stealth.

Is the board still under warranty? If so, RMA it and grab another one. If not I would replace the HS/fan combo with an after-market one --OR-- this'll be a good opportunity and the perfect excuse to buy a new vid card.
