what kind of device will output +12V DC?

I just purchsed the Omnifi DMP1 digital media player off another ATer. I need to test it out but cannot put it in my car yet as Im still waiting for all my other audio components before I start gutting the interior.

This thing has 4 wires - black (ground), red (Ignition switched +12V DC), orange (dimmer), yellow (battery +12V DC). Since I cannot hook it up to my car just yet to make sure it works, I need something that will give me the necessary +12V DC (and a ground). What will do this?

Not looking to spend too much money here....

There's a 5v too, make sure you get the right one.

You can't just pop your hood & put ground to negative and power/ignition to positive on the battery?

i can do that. but wasnt aware that the positive is +12V DC. thought it might be more or less and gets converted to +12V for the ignition wire somewhere in the car.

I guess I can always get a multimeter and check it out to be sure

It should be 12-ish unless the car is running..then 14v+ if your alternator works. If you were running an amp, you'd run power straight from the battery..I'd assume this comes off the same power source.

Although..I did have a battery that only read 9.x volts - no wonder why it didn't like starting.. 😛

a quick search at radioshack.com tells me that those would not fit my "Not looking to spend too much money here...." criteria.

I guess the PC or the car battery are the cheapest options.

For the pc power connectors, anyone know which one is the +12V, +5V and which one is the ground?

Power (4 pin connector, 0.2 centers), uses an 18 AWG cable;
A separate connector does not exist on all types of interfaces, CardBus for example.
1: +12volt
2: +12v Ground [GND]
3: +5v Ground [GND]
4: +5volt

Car battery sounds like the easiest option, and as stated above, it's what the device is intended to be run on, so why not use it?

Sounds a bit better imo than rigging it to a pc power supply, and needing to jumper wires to start it.

car would be best and prolly the method I will use to test it. but just keeping my options open
