I'm trying to order some memory from crucial, the choices are (for PC2100DDR) ECC (unbuffered), ECC (registerd), or plain (unbuffered). Is ECC better?

thanks

You don't need ECC - modern memory controllers can take care of errors without the need for the ECC memory. It's also more expensive. You should buy regular (the cheapest) type of PC2100 that Crucial sells, unless you are running an absolutely mission-critical server where people's lives depend on perfect stability.

ECC is better for servers. It double checks the memory for errors, making it more reliable. But in the process, makes it slower. So most gamers get Non ECC. Your choice
