What kind of DDR memory does the Iwill KK266 take???

I got the KK266, and ordered some DDR memory, since this is one of the touted features of the board. When I got the memory, it only had ONE notch in it, and did NOT fit the motherboard. The board's memory slots take memory with TWO notches in it. I went to a computer store, and their DDR memory ALSO has only one notch in it. They showed me a motherboard that takes the memory with one notch in it, and said that's for DDR memory. Does the KK266 take DDR or not???

Is there some OTHER kind of DDR memory with two notches? Does the KK266 acheive a 266 MHz bus speed with "regular" 133 MHz memory? If so, why are people selling DDR memory with a different physical configuration??

Was I sold a board with the wrong kind of memory slots? I need someone to explain this to me

Sorry to break it to you, but your motherboard only supports SDR memory (PC100, PC133, PC150...). DDR is a different standard with different memory slot interface, which explains why your DDR memory would not fit.

Your choice is to either exchange the motherboard for DDR kind (such as EPoX 8K7A), or return the DDR memory and get a SDR RAM. If this is a complete new PC build for you, I'd strongly recommend going the DDR route (exchange the motherboard!)

Thanks Tako. I am VERY pissed off at Iwill. It seems that they are clearly perpetuating FRAUD with this goddamn board, since it CLEARLY states on the box that the board supports a 266 MHz FSB. I'm off to buy a real DDR motherboard.

Actually, its not fraud. The board supports 266FSB based Athlons. Athlons (and Durons) by their very nature, is a DDR CPU. CPUs are available in 100FSBx2=200FSB, or 133FSBx2=266FSB. IWill is strictly talking about the CPU's 266DDR capability. Not the memory interface.

When it comes to memory's DDR capability, you have to be careful. Like you found out, there are SDR boards and DDR boards.

Looking through the message board, current favorite seems to be the Epox's EP-8K7A. It is an AMD761 chipset based board. There are other boards that are good, but 8K7A seems to give you the best bang for the buck with top notch performance and stability.

Did you buy the KK266 from an online vendor? If so, get it exchanged pronto!

Yes, I bought it from an online vendor (Newegg.com). I still think it's misleading, since it clearly states on the box, "Blistering 266 MHz Front Side Bus".

I will check out the Epox.

No chipset based on the VIA KT133A (or the KT133 for that matter) support DDR - and the KK266 is based on the KT133A. < just for reference

^ I'd go for a new motherboard. The price difference between DDR and SD is becoming slim, and DDR is much better. You're choice as to what to get, I'd suggest the FIC AD11 (especially after reading this review). But you can decide for yourself.

The IWill KA266 is the DDR mainboard from IWill based on the Ali chipset.

If you got it from Newegg, by all means exchange it Shouldn't be a problem with RMA policy. And their price on EP-8K7A is one of the best around, shipped.

I suggest waiting another couple of months with buying a ddr-chipset based mobo. There is a lot more potential in these ddr-chipsets then they are performing today. Waiting for a second generation of ddr-chipsets wil be the best to do.... i think =/

That's not misleading! It's the truth! The KK266 does support a 266MHz bus.

I have my KK266 system bus running at 280MHz. Chill out.

Called Newegg, got the RMA (they were very nice), and then bought the Epox at a local place (only $2 more than Newegg). I didn't want to wait till next week, because I've been without a computer for almost two weeks. I want to build the puter over the weekend.

Yeah the KK266 is a great board when paired with right kind of ram. A stick of Pc133 128meg and a 1.33 TB is a nice combo. well 256 would be better!

has 3 DDR memory slots and is only $105 plus
shipping at newegg.com The most important
suggestion I can make to shoppers is to make
sure you wade through all the copy (and search through
critical reviews like those at xbitlabs.com.)

I thought IWILL also had announced a KK266 Plus-R model that took DDR
memory also but haven't been able to confirm.
