what kind of connector is this?

Any brand or model on the pad? It looks like a copy of a Sega controller. Anyway, it aught to plug into the game/MIDI port. Er, yeah, USB...

thanks for the replies but i think it would be cheaper to get a new usb gamepad rather than a converter

Depends. I'm paying about 15 euros for a converter (USD 17 approx) - and there are game controllers that are MUCH more expensive than that.

That is called a DB-15 connector. It is the standard (pre-USB) game controller connector. You used to find it on sound cards and multi-I/O cards. I think I read somewhere that either XP or Vista no longer supports the old game port. But you may be able to find either a multi-I/O card with one or even just a game port card that will plug into a PCI slot.

wow it amazes me not many people know what that is... its not THAT Old!?
Check your motherboard manual (if you have on-board sound) you may be have an unused header on your mobo that supports it (and you can buy an adapter).
if not, you CAN buy usb adapters for it.
ANd yes, XP does support this, and I imagine Vista would to.
My Asus A7N8X deluxe, athlon xp 3200+ machine still has one of these ports.. they are not uncommon
