what i mean by this is the essentials, its about time for an upgrade before i got off to school. my rule of 3 has passed (when the technology is 3x faster than what i have i upgrade) i have 1ghz amd and they're a lil over that now, so ill upgrade but not to the fastest, i dont have that kinda money...a few steps down, where i get a good balance of $ per hz. i dont know whether to get amd or intel. also i'll need a new motherboard. and probablly some new ram. suggestions? i dont want top of the line stuff. moreso in the area of better than average but still getting bang for the buck. and will last me a good while.

thanks for the help...

2100+ Tbred B - 78 Dollars @ NewEgg --or- 2500+Barton ~1300 dollars
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2.0 - 130 @ NewEgg
2*256 pc2700 of your fav manufactorer - ~40 each stick
Heatsinks, Fans, etc. - ~60 dollars

If you are on a budget keep your case and try to sell your mobo and processor...and if you don't have a videocard (maybe your mobo has onboard video) just toss in some cheap card if you don't care for games. If you do the Radeon 9600 PRO seems perfect for ~200 (or is it less? I'm not sure....can anyone help me out?)

In both setups you oc the Processors to some mad number ;)

Corsair's a good brand, but for my money I still prefer Crucial, which comes at a lower price without really compromising quality. Any brand that uses Samsung is also good in my book. Corsair makes good memory, but you'll pay for it dearly.

The Barton, from what I've heard, is much faster. However, it's also a newer type of chip, and therefore runs at the higher $130 price. I'm partial to the Tbred, it's probably much more than you'll need.

I don't see any reason that this setup wouldn't be upgradeable. It's fairly new equipment that should last you for a few years at least, most likely until it's time to upgrade to a newer chip again.

I would go with a

Pentium 4 2.4b for about 165.

A nice Abit bh7 for around 90

and some quality Kingston Hyer X pc3200 for about 90 (512)

You can easily hit every bit of 2.7 ghz or above with that CPU, i hit 3ghz :)

Good Luck.

The link for the Asus A7N8X Deluxe is: www.asus.com/products/mb/socketa/a7n8x-d/overview.htm

I'd also recommend building it off a 2100+ TBred or 2500+ Barton. The Barton is more expensive because of the L2 cache increasing the die size. The Asus A7N8X Deluxe will support upgrades, and I think it can run a 400mhz FSB (an expected upgrade of new bartons).

Well if you really care for preformance vs cost the 2100+ and 2500+ are hard to beat and last time I checked they are not Intel chips ;)
