So I bought this cd on Amazon, and instead of recieving the normal jewel case retail cd, I got another one. I'm cool with it, I just want to know what kind of cd/release this is. It came in a paper case and has a little bio of the artist, as well as upcoming tour dates. More interestingly, it states the release date for the cd, as well as a track listing that is noted as "Not Final Sequence." I looked it up, and the track listing is in a different order, though all the tracks are still there. Finally, there's contact information for retailers that are interested in stocking this cd. This looks something like a cd that an artist would send out to prospective retailers... is there such a thing?

Sounds like an early release demo of some sort. I used to work in a record store, and would get those once in a while to play in store.

Or a promo CD that is sent to marketing depts or buyers of companies that sell CDs. We have a lot of those at work here. Gotta love the free stuff from marketing.

I used to work down the hall from a radio station. They would toss out CDs all the time that had the same stuff on the disks.

Yea, from one of Amazon's vendors.

No pics, cuz I don't have a camera at college, but I think you guys got it. I just find it funny that somebody would sell this, but whatever.

Not funny, illegal. Hence "Not for resale".

WELLLllllll, if the selling party obtained it legally, there's no problem with selling your private property. The RIAA seems to think they're just letting you use it, despite the transaction being called a 'purchase'.
That label is primarily designed to keep record stores from selling them as a 'bona fide' product.

Radio stations and record company promotion people leak far more material than the industry is willing to admit.

I used to have tons of those when I worked at a record store. Is there a hole punched in the UPC too?

Yup, sounds like a promo CD (they get sent to radio stations, music stores, places like that). They're not supposed to be resold, as it clearly states on the packaging/CD, but it seems like people do it all the time and I've never heard of anybody getting in trouble for it (now, reselling it *before* the album is released is a big deal, record companies would surely frown upon that). How do you think albums get leaked on the internet? Probably 95% of the time it's from promo CDs.

You may also have more promo CDs than you realize. A lot of times artists will just take a piece out of the barcode with a hole punch and send retail CDs to radio stations as promo discs. Because of the special package of some promos and limited production, some are actually pretty valuable. I'd assume the one you received isn't, but you might want to check into it just to be sure. I remember at a music trading site I'm a member of some guy received a (Madonna, I think?) promo CD that was worth at least a few hundred dollars. Feel bad for the guy who sent it, must not have known what it was worth. :)

They actually are very involved with used CD stores. Large amounts of goods change hands.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to getting a free CD for promotional purposes as a "purchase".
