I will be graduating highschool in 2 years and not sure what career i will pursue.
First of all im running about a 3.2GPA average. I was thinking computers but i have two uncles who have gruaduate college in the computer related field and are finding trouble with employment with good pay(both live in the dallas area) I was also thinking about medical field. Not like doctor or anything just pharmacist or physician or some sort. I know that pharmacy is a really good field and has alot to offer(pay, lots of jobs) and im sure physicians can aquire jobs very easily also. but the problem is that i may not get into the college i want(ULM-the college u want to be in for pharmacy in louisiana is not easy to get into). if u have any other suggestions or any comment what so ever. please post. THANKS in advance

Choosing a career for money is a sure way to unhappiness. Find out what you love, then do that. Don't worry about pay, don't worry about opportunity. If you love it, you'll be good enough to find work.

you're a sophomore in high school? dont worry about what career path you should take.

why are you worrying now? i graduated college 2 years ago and i still don't know what career path i'm going to take.

Explore all of your options, don't back yourself into a corner because you think you like something right now.

Geezus, have some fun while you can. Bang some chicks, drink, smoke?, raise hell like there is no tomorrow.

There is plenty of time to get serious later. 😛

Thanks for all the post u guys. yeah it may be too early to decide on my career. but hey, it can;t hurt right?

Refuse management =)

But, if you do like computers/programming... you can still go into it if you can get into a good school for CS, do the work, and find a coop job.

Those 2 years will go so fast, you will be stunned. I wouldn't really worry about that the path and in 10 years who knows what the job market will look like, it's too hard to tell.

Get As and take as MANY AP CLASSES AS YOU POSSIBLIY CAN. You won't regret it.

Pharmacy right now is a solid choice if you want good pay/job security. However, 10 years down the road it might change. My advice would be to take a variety of classes your freshman and sophomore year in college and then decide.

it can't hurt, but it's an exercise in futility

my advice would be not to choose jobs on what is hot or what is not at the moment, and to take jobs where you can grow as a person and professionally (worth way more than any salary you'll make as a teenager). i just graduated with a degree in CS and its not that hard to find jobs, btw.

Don't worry about it, 90% of the kids who go into college have no idea what they wanna major in, just try and work hard in Junior year, since thats the one that colleges care about the most (sophmore and freshman really arent all that big, even if you get C's in them, if you pull up to B's and A's junior year, colleges will look fondly on you for improving and maturing)

This is comming from a Junior who's going through the whole process right now

Im in nursing school now, once i finish avg signing bonus is ~15,000$. Im pursing my masters after that to either be a nurse anesthetist or nurse practitioner. Great field, great pay.

I am going the university route getting my B.S.N first, not the silly 2 year route ;-0 . My girlfriends in pharmacy school its tough as hell u better be awesome in chemistry (all kinds of it)

We both go to university of maryland school of nursing/pharmacy and both are top 10 schools in respective field, if u want to go to either school, come here 🙂

Thanks for the responces guys. and vick, i will really look into nursing. sounds like a great career with great opportunities. and i know you guys are right, i shouldnt worry about it now. but anyway thanks i appriciate the responses alot.

I think you are smart for not wanting to be a doctor but wanting to be a physician at the same time.

"Not like doctor or anything just pharmacist or physician or some sort"

a physician is a doctor.

1 : a person skilled in the art of healing; specifically : a doctor of medicine

Btw, anyone who says don't get a job for money is nuts. The reason you work is for money. The more the better. The more you earn the more vacations you can take, the more places you can travel, the more money you will have for retirement, the earlier you can retire, The better house you can have, the nicer the area you can live in, the more you can provide for your wife and kids, in short the more money you have the better opportunities you can have. That being said, find out what you like to do and then find out how to make money at it. It is good to enjoy the work you do.

In short find a way to make lots of money at something you enjoy.

Oh, one other thing, go to you school's counselors and ask them for advise. Chances are they will have lots of information on future careers and know what questions to ask. I bet their first question will be along the lines of what are your interests? Do you like working with people? Do you like computers and technology? Do you like animals (vets make decent money)?

If I could do it over again I'd probably go into nursing. It's a great field.

Plus, male nurses are in short supply - so that's a big bonus for you when you're looking for work.
