i'm willing to put in $500 to repair it.

why not just spend $1500 you ask? well, even at $1500, i probably have to spend $ to repair it.

i expect a $1000 cars dont depreciate much. as long as it runs and passes inspeaction, ANY car is worth at least $1000.

My plan is to drive it for a couple of years and sell it for $1000. then buy another car for $1000, rince + repeat.

why not just drive it till it drops THEN buy another? because i like variety.

so anyway, which car for $1000?

There's tons, check your local classifieds. Lots of 80's domestics and high mileage imports going for that. I've bought fully running cars for under $500 before, just don't expect them to be pretty, quiet, good smelling, or reliable. :)

Good smelling, well that just ruins the deal for me.

Go to auctions and new car dealerships. Dealers take all kinds of cars like that in on trade (where do you think all those push/pull/drag your trade-in cars end up), and can't sell them off their lot with all the late model nice cars, cause it would make them look like a junk dealership. They usually park them out back and sell them for pennies.

Ask to see their trade-in lot. I got my 92 4 cyl Mustang like that - I paid $200 out the door (including tax, title, plate, and registration) 2 years ago with 42k miles on it. It needed a radiator, a door handle, a seat track, and the door needed to be re-hung. I spent $140 or so for the parts and did all the work myself, except for the door rehanging. I paid $100 to have the door fixed. The car now has ~61k miles on it, and still runs perfectly.

Black88GTA, that sounds awesome, any more information on that? I've been to a few auctions, but they were offering only new model cars. I haven't really thought much about visiting a dealer for cheap used cars.

I like FWD chryslers but there are plenty of good cars you can get for under $1k. My current beater is a 89 caravan turbo that I paid $800 for about 2 years ago. Another good one would be any of the older RWD V8 domestics.

You just need to be careful to pick a car that doesn't have any expensive immediate problems. Don't worry about what brand it is--just avoid really troublesome models, like Tempos, pre-91 Escorts, 4 cylinder GMs (except Saturn), sporty cars unless they're in wonderful shape, and anything that hasn't been well taken care of.

I just picked up a decent looking/running '93 Mercury Sable 3.8 GS with about 125,000 miles for $500 from my buddy, including the Pioneer CD player that he put in after he bought it last year. I figure I'll replace all the lightbulbs in the front grill (remember how the whole front end of Sables used to light up?), shine it up, drive it on deliveries for spits and giggles for a few months, vacuum it out, and probably sell it for at least $800, which is what my friend was going to accept from anyone other than me.
