What is the difference between 8mm, hi-8, and digital 8 (are hi-8 and digital 8 the same thing) old 8mm was the reel type, but that doesn't make sense to me since 8mm camcorders are being sold new.

I've been using Hi8 since 1991. 8mm is the same, only not as high resolution. Digital 8 records 1 hour of digital video on a 2 hour 8mm tape. My next camera will be Digital 8, because of my huge library of Hi8 tapes. Best of both worlds for me, and 8mm tape is FAR cheaper than miniDV tapes.
