Best picture that my coolpix could get... i don't know how to use the macro shot function apparently.

Noticed it in the backyard here in Grenoble, France. The tail glows consistently green, like an LED... why we noticed it. Its about half an inch long, no wings, hard plate like segments on its back.

I tried a lazy google search, but i don't know the right terminology and "glow in the dark insect" gets SO much junk in reply... phosphorescent didn't help much either... any bug nerds know this one? only glowing bugs i've encountered beforehand were fireflies in Texas.

I was driving on a B-highway last night.

There were so many fireflies out that looking into a dark feild or forest, it would just sparkle. It was truly amazing, I love this little bugs.

Also, because there were so many (is it mating season?) I kept running into them and they'd leave a little glowing green spot on my windsheild that would glow for a coupla minutes. kinda cool, kinda sad. Oh well, it was just really cool to see.

oh yeah. OP said it was glowing consistantly, fireflies flash on and off.

So a firefly doesn't nessecarily have to "fly"? this guy has no wings, and the fireflies i remember had a yellowish glow. i was trying to take multiple angles, but the camera just wouldn't focus right... but he's a walker with a plated like back.

yeah i agree. you tards saying its a regular firefly have a brain deficit. if it is some other type of firefly, then ok, but it certainly is not the one most people are accustomed to.

Of course it's a firefly. All beetles are wingless before they pupate, fireflies are no exception. There are almost 150 species of fireflies in the world. This one is probably a young Luciola mingrelica.
