Sadly I won't have a car down in LA..and am looking for another way to get around campus and the city.

The main things I'm looking at is price..I definitely don't want anything desirable to thiefs, ability to ride up hills easily..since I'll be in a relatively hilly area, and I'll need some good security measures against theft. Comfort I guess, is also important.

Any suggestions?

I would suggest buying any old cheap piece of crap that will get you where you want to go. It is going to be stolen no matter what you do. Save yourself some heartache.

Look at some thrift shops. You'll be able to find some rusted out old 10 speed for $20. Sad thing is, even though it looks so old and beaten up, some loser is going to steal it anyways.

Get a scooter. Many advantages of a bike, and you can do things like shop.

giant, trek, cannondale,

I wouldn't even do that. Go to a second hand shop and get a used mountain bike.

It's just unsafe to keep your bike unattended out in the open as you would be required to do so for a general commuter bike. People with expensive bikes always take their bikes indoors wherever they go.

I'll give the advice i got about two years ago. Because UCLA is in a semi-urban area, I suggest a city-hybrid bike, which is basically a slightly toned down mountainbike thats a bit smoother and built for comfort. This will help navigate over potholes and such. Look for an aluminum frame, or if you're loaded, get a titanium framed bike with a nice U-lock to go with it. Yes, the last part is important. Get an extremely hi quality U-lock like the Kryptonite Evolution2000 or above. Those other puny ones don't stand a chance :)
