My gripes about the iphone:

- Only syncs with ONE computer. Try and sync it with any other and it'll want to erase your phone.
- Apple's control over the app store, and not allowing apps with competing functionality.
- The AT&T 3G network (or more correctly, the lack of a functional 3G network).
- Call drops and failed calls.
- System hangs that can't be recovered from (no detachable battery).

Lock button + hold button for 10 seconds forces a reboot so the hangs (rare) arent that big a deal

I wanted one for a while, then I realized that I never use mobile web. I also already have an iPod. There's really no incentive for me to get one (plus, I don't have the money for the data plan).

After they updated my blackberry storm this thing rocks. The new one has wifi so I would go with that instead.

I agree with the OP. Hate itunes - I guess you even need itunes to jailbreak it?
Lacking multitasking (e.g. IM program) and Job's stranglehold on the app store are further turn-offs.
I would get an android in a heartbeat if they actually had a decent android phone that works with AT&T's 3G (which works awesome for me).

Wow so your Droid has been working an entire 4 days, impressive!

Indeed. I realize 4 days is not enough time to see any long term issues, but so far my impression is very favorable. My experience with Verizon's 3G network has been so good that I have yet to turn on wifi. Hopefully this performance will be consistently this good or better through the life of the phone.

So please, feel free to make fun of my opinion given how recently I purchased the phone.

I had an original iPhone (EDGE) that I liked, but the internet was understandably slow. I had a 3G that I had purchased on launch day that I ended up throwing against the wall after too many lockups and failed calls. After that I had a BB Pearl that was fine as a phone, but awful as an internet device. With it I had failed calls and text messages that would not go through in spite of seemingly good AT&T signal.

-physical keyboard...I know I'm in the minority, but I just have to have one

I feel the same way...I tried a touch screen only phone, and it drove me crazy trying to text on the thing. I only dealt with it until I could talk a customer service person into letting me upgrade before my upgrade date.

For some reason, I just don't buy anything Apple. Nothing against apple, I tell everyone in my family to go Apple so I can feign ignorance when they have problems ;)

No physical keyboard
No multi-tasking (once you've tried it you won't believe how you lived without it)
No customization of the OS
No expandable memory
No replaceable batteries
AT&T network reliability
AT&T plan prices
iTunes
Commie App store holding back good apps

If I forgot something, please let me know.

Android Phone

Only problem is that there are no good GSM android phones out right now.
HTC Dream/Magic/Hero? They are all yesteryear's tech.
Give me a GOOD android phone and I will buy it!

I absolutely HATE saying it but the iPhone seems to be the best phone hardware wise.

BTW - I also would prefer a H/W keyboard, i.e. something like the Moto Droid/Milestone. That phone is just so butt ugly!

funny how one of the most requested features of the palm pre was a virtual keyboard.

People want both. I love the keyboard on my Droid, but use the virtual keyboards on occasion.

I won't touch an iPhone for a few reasons. 1)No multitasking, 2)No physical keyboard, 3)No replaceable batter, 4)None upgradeable storage, 5)iTunes, 6)Small, low resolution touch screen. 7)Apple's locked down OS and draconian app store.

Wanna give some examples of what you need to multitask?

Everyone says that they NEED multitasking so bad, but I never really find myself thinking "damn, I wish i could multi right now"

it takes only a few min to jailbreak it and get multitasking working. I'm doing that as I'm typing this by running pandora in the background.

You forgot to mention Flash support. Thats why I got rid of mine. I couldnt stand that every other website I went too didn't work because of the lack of Flash.

Also, speaking of Flash, thats another thing that pisses me off at Apple. Adobe has apparently made Flash possible on the iPhone/Touch but can't put it on the iPhone because Apple will not allow it to be ported over or something...poor decision in my opinion.

I think it's cause they don't want flash apps competing with the app store and flash would kill battery life

Why would you need multitasking for IM? The program can keep you online for as long as you want and auto opens if someone messages you. Have you even used an iPhone?

Listening to music while web surfing.
Piping music to the car stereo while running TomTom.
Running a bit-torrent client in the background while doing other things.

If you jailbreak it( five minutes of downloading one program and clicking a button) you can do all that

5 minutes in an exaggeration, I could go from downloading blackra1n on a slow ass dialup connection and having an iPhone jailbroke in about 3 minutes. On a slow DSL I could do it in about 60 seconds total. And then I can do more with my iPhone than any phone I've ever used. And you cannot fuck up the process, plug in the iPhone run the program and it's done. And somebody is actually capable of fucking up the new jailbreak process, they're not a person who should be multitasking in the first place.

Jailbroke iPhone > * (by a large margin) I never found the need to Multitask, but it's there for your pleasure once you jailbreak it. I'm good just doing 1 thing at a time on my phone, but hay that's just me :)

Yes, iTunes sucks, but you should hate the ridiculous cost of the plan more.

same arguments over and over again. same plan anywhere else. get a winmo smartphone like pure or touch pro 2 from at&t? $30/month. same with any other "smartphone."

iTunes sucks but how often do you use it? Just to copy your music and your apps. 90% of the time you're just CHARGING your iphone anyway...

i hate itunes, but it's rarely a problem with me because you only use it so often...

Everyone complains about keyboard andt hen points to Droid. Droid isn't exactly that great of a keyboard either. HTC's phones are the best at physical keyboards, and there are plenty of other phones that have better keyboards than the Droid.

Furthermore, with Droid's inability to do multitouch, of course its onscreen keyboard sucks. The iPhone keyboard trumps all other onscreen keyboards.. BY FAR. HTC's Touch HD2 and Droid Eris come closest..

I played with a Droid and it had one of the worst QWERTY keyboards I've ever used. Which is crazy because my favorite QWERTY keyboard ever on a phone is Motorola's Q9C. The Droids physical keyboard is worse than a lot of virtual ones. Motorola went out of their way to make the keyboard crappy it seems. The phones pretty solid besides that. iPhones virtual one is definitely better then either on the Droid.

That bad?? Haha I know it's no BlackBerry or HTC Touch Pro 2... but jeez. I'd use the onscreen over the physical.

this is like LCD and CRT or something. People refuse to go touchscreen or LCD for a long time... but it's not like touchscreen technology is that far behind like LCD monitors once were...

Different strokes I guess.. I love the keyboard on my Droid and having a virtual one is nice as well for quick replies. The keyboard takes a bit of getting used to but I find it extremely fast to type on and comfortable.

The only thing that pisses me off is the delete key and the enter key are so close that I hit them accidently when I want the other.
