What keeps me from wanting an Iphone

Itunes, I hate this program so much, here's why:

1. Itunes is heavy, it installs startup services and strange applications that I don't understand why I need, also it tries to push Safari

2. The synching is annoying, why should the iphone or ipod be deleted with another itunes, i hate that.

I dislike how locked down the iphone/ipod is to itunes. i wish it was more free range, IE I could use it with many other PC's, and sync with others, and even take songs off the phone.

That's my ONLY gripe, otherwise I love my iphone!

I think there are other 3rd party programs you can use to manage ipods and iphones. That said, both my wife and I have one, and I HATE itunes, but I don't really sync much so I havent sought out and alternative.

android is getting better, so my next phone might be droid 2.0 or whatever is the best one at the time.

Aside from updating the software, I don't really ever sync my iphone. I download all the apps and stuff directly on to it, and my contacts/email/calendar is synced to google using exchange. My music hasn't really changed in a long time, so I don't really sync that aside from once initially.

edit: I think the last time I synced it was when the version 3 software release came out.

I was the same way. Didn't see any reason to have one.

Until I got one. Now I use it constantly. I've never had a phone for anything other than making phone calls and voice mail.

OP pretty much sums up my feelings, I got my wife one for Christmas, so I figured I might as well join her. I love the phone, can't stand iTunes.

Actually I agree with you there. The onscreen keyboard of the iPhone/iPod touch is cool but that screen just gets caked with oil and fingerprint smudges. The qwerty keypad is definitely a cleaner solution so that you're not constantly cleaning your screen. Also I'm never sure if I'm hitting the right letter so I have to leave my finger there that extra second to see that the right letter highlights before I let go.

Touchscreen is the biggest reason for me. I have no desire to use a touchscreen for my messaging.

Also, having to use iTunes, because I freaking hate iTunes.

Once you are used to it, it flows pretty naturally. I have decent luck with the auto correct as well. Usually helps me out.

not my style at all.
I don't text. I kill normal phones often enough with the work environment.
I want a big screen and a big keyboard to browse, do email, etc.

Having been a sorta recent converter to the iphone from many years with blackberry, i can tell you that the OP is spot on- itunes is by far the worst part of it.

The touchscreen is hard for about a week. You get used to it really quickly. Even my dad ( a 66 year old guy that doesn't know how to record to a DVR ) made the switch and doesn't mind it.

What kept me from signing up with AT&T for an iPhone:

- AT&T coverage
- plan price per month ~ $70/mo
- fragility of the iPhone

Strangely, I prefer the touchscreen.

Crazy. I tried one of these things out at the Apple store when I was in SF last year and I wanted to throw the thing against the wall, it was so frustrating and annoying.

funny how one of the most requested features of the palm pre was a virtual keyboard.

I don't understand the iTunes hate, I plug in my Touch and it syncs what I have said up. It's whatever as a media player, I don't even use it for that. But for syncing it's the easiest programs I've used, it's relatively quick to sync, and never crashes. Also it has by far the best smart playlist feature I've seen. One I've seen in a program that syncs with a phone/PMP any ways. Could it be better? Sure, but there's nothing wrong with it. Anymore I don't even have to touch it, I plug my shit in and it does it's thing. Using smart playlists I don't even have to do shit to get new tunes I want to sync.
