What jobs completely let you work your own hours?

Just curious what jobs let you work whatever hours you want, maybe even however many hours you want. That is, jobs that don't require the more or less traditional 9-5.

This is a serious question, so please, no entry level positions like mcdonalds or gas station attendant. I'm looking for real careers, 70k+ annual salary, but with the twist of a completely free schedule.

EDIT --> I am currently a software engineer and work a ~10-6 job, although no one really cares when I come and go (unless I have a meeting). I am allowed to work from home when I need to, although it's a bad idea to overdo it.

I know this is already more flexible than most jobs, but yes, I'm looking for something even more flexible.

My wife makes well into six figures working out of our home. She's in software. Everyone she works with does the same, and they too are in software. I know of countless others that also work from home a significant portion of the time, if not all the time.

Other than that, I have no idea. Most higher-paying jobs require a lot of face time to really remain competitive.

[edit]I guess I should also say that she works her own hours, but I figured that was implied by working out of the house.[/edit]

Marry a wealthy person, then kill them (be sure you're in their will before offing them; I won't make that mistake again).

Yup... My stepfather's shop opens at 8am and closes at 6pm, but he lets his managers do all that while he plans his next ventures. Also, he spends a lot of time playing CoD4. I was strangely amazed that a man in his fifties cared about having two fast video cards in his new gaming PC.

Hmm... I'm in the software field myself. I'm allowed to work from home occasionally, but not full time telecommuting. Also, most of the people I know that do telecommuting still work 9-5 because they need to call in to meetings, talk with coworkers, etc.

Where does she work that lets her work from anywhere and anytime?

Yeah but you should ask him how much work he had to put in to get himself there

self employment/entrepreneurship is no fucking cakewalk.

I've watched him struggle pretty closely. He's had to put in a lot of hours. More than most of us who work for The Man. I left that bit out because I don't write novels on ATOT.

software development can be fairly flexible. The company I am with wants you to be in the office for most of the regular working day, so coming in any time between 8 and 12 is good.

Eh, I'd rather not say. It's a large international company though.

Her company isn't some random exception either. There are plenty of companies that do this, especially international companies looking to get a foot in a certain market. You just have to go beyond the typical 9-5, submit your resume to some HR person, etc. approach and really build up your network of contacts to get in these doors.

If you want to know more about how to get your foot in the door at such a place, or even to just consult on your own, feel free to PM me.

Probably self-employment or run your own company.

Most businesses tend to avoid letting their employees work from home daily because they can't account for the time they worked... most cases.

As a Sys Admin, I can set my own hours, roughly. I at least have to work the 40 hour workweek.

I'm doing 4/10s now....7am-6pm with a 1 hour lunch at home. Tuesday-Friday. I set those hours, but could deviate and change the free day if I want. There would be little problem with me working a lot after hours, but the main reason I don't is because I need to react if there are any problems or downtime during the day. It's also nice to have a relatively stable schedule...it keeps me from slacking too much.

Few employers would allow you to work 2, 20 hour days....even though I've asked before. :p

I'm not sure the 'sisters' in prison will let you arrange your soap-dropping schedule.
