What it's the easy way to ID a modem, to find the drivers?

I need to find the driver for a modem but I don't want to open the PC, maybe there is a software out there that will allow me to find the model of the modem.

thanks

is it a 56k modem? if you have xp it should just find a driver for you.. or else you can go into your device manager and see if you can find the name of the modem, but i don't see why you don't want to open the case.. it's not dangerous or anything, haha, but give that a try

Usually...

I believe the command is ATI# where the # is usually from 0 to 10.

Open up Hyperterminal, and create a connection directly to the modem's com port. Once connected, type in ATI, and then continue with ATI0, ATI1, and so on until it responds with ERROR.

On one of the lines you should see a string identifying the modem, most of the time if I recall, it's ATI3 that does, but not necessarily always.

I'm sorry guys, I forgot to mention that this is a Win98Se system that have a Virus (too many in fact), and the PC did not have a AV, so I'm formatting and loading everything back with the same OS. But the customer did no have the original driver for the modem and I could not load to Win98 to see the hardware.

Sisoft Sandra can sometimes see the actual hardware when windows is acting dumb. I had it describe a video card that I was having trouble getting the driver for.

open the case, look at the chip on the modeom (biggest / in center) and type it into a search engine. You should be able to ID it from there. It might also have manufacturer information printed on it, allowing you to find the model#.
