My cousin got a couple DUIs recently and is turning himself in to be admitted into County today. Orange County, California Theo Lacy Facility if that makes any difference. He's a good kid who did a couple stupid things. Anyway, he's got to serve his time so he's sucking it up and going. Obviously he's pretty nervous and doesn't really know what to expect. Does anyone have any exprerience with this? As of right now he's taking the clothes on his back. I'll put a couple bucks into his spending account, but we're just not sure if he can bring some books, paper and pen, or anything. I told him to say that he's suicidal/depressed and maybe they'd let him out after three days.

If only he rolled his car while you were in it with him. With no one else on the road.

I wasn't aware you could bring anything in. What is this, summer camp?

You can bring the clothes off your back, but you'll be wearing their uniform, their shoes, maybe his own personal underwear. The jail controls everything you own there...from snacks, cards, pen and paper, hygeine, etc. Everything has a cost.

Whatever can fit up your ass. Seriously.

Bring some money too. You'll get a chance to hit the canteen and stock up on smokes and such (and like Hollywood, smokes really are currency in jail/prison).

Butt Blocker 2000!

I'd expect he'd only be allowed things like books and pictures. Bringing in a DS isn't going to fly.

If he forgets something you can likely bring it or send it to him. Books, magazines, etc are allowed in prison, at the discretion of the official policy and/or the person that processes the mail. Not sure about county jail, that might be different.

County jail he'll be living in dorm style most likely. Which means he'll be sharing toilets, showers, and TV with dozens of other people.

You can't bring ANYTHING in (unless it fits up your ass). You can't even bring your own smokes, although you can buy smokes if you have money.

That was a state prison. County jails are completely different.

His bible?

Well maybe if he would have had his bible with him when he went to his sister's house, he wouldn't have committed any crimes.

Every facility is going to be different, and with the ability to soak paper in drugs, most paper items from the outside are now being banned. Many jails are banning tobacco use as well, so smokes may not be available either. Sure, drugs and cigarettes are probably available on the "black market" that usually exists, but they can get ya extra jail time...
He should contact the facility where he is going and ask them. He'd probably get a much more intelligent (and accurate) answer than asking here...
