What IT Cert Makes you Jealous?

As a CISSP, I'd say it's very overrated. Good stuff, but nothing to bow down to. If you want an InfoSec cert that's really worthy of respect, it's the GSE.

I envy that PM cert indy is going for .. forget which one it is. I don't do much real PM, so I can't apply, but it's pretty cool.

I also envy the high end cisco certs: CCNP and whatnot.

this is also very true. If you want to move up, show initiative and get more responsibilities, and move into a job. It's the best way to move up and into the field you want to work in. I have no certs, but a 4 year from the local uni that work partially paid for.

Not jealous of any of them. Wanted the VCDX for a long time but my career has skyrocketed so much without it and there's still room to grow. I don't think I want to invest the ~200 hours of time needed to build a design, create all the documentation for it, then defend it. If I knew a 50% pay raise was coming my way for doing it, then I'd reconsider but I doubt there would be.

I've got tons of certifications already and keeping them up to date is a bitch.

I think that's the smart approach. You have to look at ROI and determine if the effort and cost is worth the anticipated benefit. For me, I haven't gotten many certifications over my career because the benefits weren't there -- I've generally worked in corporate IT departments and none cared about certs so they did not have any benefit. For me, a PMP makes more sense than an MBA because the "bang for buck" is much greater.

+1 I had thought about getting it after I got my CCNP but I got into the Server/Storage side and never pursued my networking further. My goal this year is to get my PMP certification. I have found that studying is a lot harder with two children. :eek:

The only cert I really want is VCP. Hopefully testing in a few weeks.

Boss doesn't really want to promote me until I get something on paper :)rolleyes:), but this has the added benefit of padding my resume a little, so there's that. :p

i had a CCA and CCNA 15 years ago or so. Certs dont get you more money at my company so why bother.

The sad thing about certification exams is that most people who get them get them to use them as a "front" for expertise. In addition many people who get them CHEAT like hell. I'm not going to mention the companies, but with a credit card and google you can pretty much purchase exam questions and study those.

In addition many people simply do a rough study of the material then study exam dumps. As a result certs lose their credibility.

I have no certs, but not really jealous of those who do but I respect them for having the ambition to get them. I've thought of getting some, but the fact that they expire is a turn off. I'm not good at theory stuff, it would take me like 3 years just to study for it, only for it to expire in 3 years. Would take up a lot of my time and probably not give me much except for bragging rights in my email signature... for 3 years - time goes by fast, 3 years is like a few months these days. I don't find it's worth while. Though, not having any certs can make it harder to find a job depending on where you want to go to, but there's not much in tech here anyway and most places go by word of mouth and experience.

CCNA and CCNP and similar certs are probably what I'd want to go for if I did get some though. I regret not getting in on the Comptia certs before they had an expiry. Now it's probably not even worth getting those. The Microsoft certs are probably good to have too, but their cert system is complicated as hell. You practically need a PHD just to understand their system. You need like 10 certs to actually have 1 cert, it's pretty nuts. Unless they changed that, been a while since I looked at it.
