What island of hawaii to go to?

SO im going to Hawaii. And i STILL haven't figured out what island im gonig to. Obviously, we are gonna stay in ohau for a couple of days. After that, what island? Because of time contraints I can only go to another ONE island. and i can't decide. help ATOT?

I've only been to Maui and Oahu (Maui is much less developed, but I only spent ~12 hours on Oahu visiting the Arizona Memorial so I can't judge it very well except to say its public transit system was a bit confusing 🙂). Maui is nice. 🙂

oahu is nice, but i went on a resort to the big island (hawaii) and it was nice. The volcano is there separating the two extremes of the island. One side is a desert and the other side is a tropical rain forest. I would recommend going on a helicopter ride and you get to see all of this and the waterfalls. Otherwise, i would recommend maui if you just want to see the lush gardens and so forth. The big island isn't the prettiest nor the most crowded by far. The top two are obviously oahu (waikiki especially) and maui.

I'm going to the big island next. Gonna check out kilauea then go up to the observatories. After that, probably maui.

If this is your first time, stick with Oahu.

Maui or the Big Island. If you go to the Big Island I highly recommend staying in Kona.

i would totally agree, but it is the desert side. if you are into that kind of thing, then yes, if not, Hilo is the place is practically drizzles rain all year long. They are over 300 inches of rainfall this year i think.

Only been to Kauai. It was a blast. Scenic, tons to do, etc. Then again I bet it's going to be hard to find any of the islands boring. I've heard Maui is better suited for couples? I know my parents went there for an anniversary and they went on scuba trips, helicopter rides, and lots of other stuff. Or so some island hopping to see what the other islands have to offer.

If you go to Maui, dont do the road to Hana. I thought the actual horrible drive outweighed the beautiful scenery by far. I took a helicopter tour, went surfing, shopping in laheina, snorkeling all over the place etc. etc. The one thing that I didnt do was the zip lines they have.

But, I'd definitely do: surfing lessons, snorkeling all over the island and helicopter tour (if you're money bags).

Are you a good surfer? How long have you been surfing?

hmmmm any paticular reason for that?

That way you can do the touristy stuff like Diamond Head and Waikiki, but there are still many places where you can try out things like surfing or scuba diving. That way on your next trip you'll have a better idea of things you like to do.

Going to O'ahu, (if you never get out of Honolulu/Waikiki) is like going to San Francicsco, only a bit more tropical. NASTY traffic, LOTS of tourists, LOTS of crime. Granted, once you get out of the city, the island is beautiful, and there's a lot of things to do, but you HAVE to rent a car. Public transportation for tourists just sux. MOST hotels charge $25/day (or more) to park your rental car...that jacks up that cost. We go to Maui at least once per year average. (We own a timeshare in Ka'anapalai) and like it much more than O'ahu. You have to rent a car there. NO viable options. Big Island is nice. West (Kona) side is deserty, with lots of baren lavascaped areas, but the east side is (for the most part) lush and green. Much more "rustic" and less developed than O'ahu or Maui, and things are spread out. Biggest island of all, and bigger than ALL the others combined. DEFINITELY have to rent a car. Kauai is nice and green almost everywhere, and much more laid back than the others. Once again, you need a rental car to get around.
