I honestly do not think a majority of people even understand how many firearms are classified as "semi-automatic".

I hunted for years with a 20 gauge "semi auto" shotgun. It held three rounds and looked almost exactly like this:

There has been several different definitions given in this thread, also there is no real reason that a definition should go beyond looks. If looks is the driving factor for why mass murderers choose the weapon then it might be worth banning the weapon based on looks to see if that works.
