Hi,

I always use this script that a user here once posted (forgot the name) to measure my reboot time / system performance.

Just double click on it, then press OK to reboot your system and give you the reboot time. It measures the reboot time from Windows Shutting down, restarting, all the way till you first see the Windows Desktop again.

Download RebootTime.vbs HERE

Please post your Reboot time / System Setup / Any Tweaks you have made.

I will start:

System: TOSHIBA SATELLITE L655-1HC

 • Intel Core i5 M 480 @ 2.67 / 2.93 GHz.
 • 8 GB DDR3 RAM
 • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 1 GB
 • 15.6" Toshiba TruBrite® HD TFT display
 • Hitachi 500 GB HDD (7200 RPM)

Tweaks:

 • Set waiting time for non responding applications to 0 while shutting down
 • Disable NTFS time stamps
 • Disable NTFS Encryption
 • Disable Compression in NTFS System
 • Disable Windows Start-up Sound
 • Disable Low Disk space Checks
 • Disable System Restore (I never used it in my life)
 • Disable Windows Error Reporting
 • Disable Windows Time Service
 • Disable Program Compatibility Assistant
 • Disable Windows Experience Service
 • Disable Windows Defender
 • Clear Temp Files / Software Distribution (Windows Update Temp Downloads folder) folder
 • Defragment Via PerfectDisk12 (Performance Aggressive Defragmentation Pass, Followed by a Boot Time Defrag
 • Clean Registry via Auslogics Registry Cleaner
 • Defragment Registry via Winmend Registry Defrag
 • Disable unnecessary startup programs

I reboot about once every 6 months or so, unless a Windows update forces me to do it sooner.. ;)

Yes, I know that's not what you are asking, but personally I think it's a waste of time and effort to take so many steps (some of which you should NOT do, like disabling System Restore) just so you can reboot your computer a few seconds faster. Do you really reboot often enough to make it even slightly worth the effort?

He's using a laptop, so I'm sure he shuts it down alot.

For a normal user without OCD this a complete waste of time.
I couldn't find any previous threads mentioning this program, are you sure it was on AT, and what was your username at the time?

45+, and I'm not running a random chunk of VB. Initial POST is ~10 seconds, AHCI BIOS takes 10-20, then Windows takes 30+ to start (34s last I timed it), with shutdown time somewhere in the 10-20 second range.

Security updates account for at least 90% of my reboots, with re-purposing my PC as a diagnostic tool the other <10%. My notebook turns off even less often than my desktop, and runs for at least 2 straight days in S3 (had a ~40 hour power outage late last year, with no reboot required).

Windows 7 is the first MS OS where I've been able to reliably fix things through System Restore, and at the worst, do no harm by it. You'd have to pay me to turn it off.

Should anything go wrong, I use Acronis True Image FTW. Puts System Restore down to shame.

Just my 2 cents ;)

Was doing a lot of update work this morning, so it was a good chance to measure times on my Lenovo T510. On reboot, boot time was about 8 seconds. Then Win 7 load time was 15 seconds to reach the Fingerprint Reader (FPR). It sits there until I swipe my finger. Then it is fully loaded in about 4.5 seconds.

One beer- unless I drink 2 many B4 entering my pre-boot pass-phrase.

Then it can take much, much longer.

My main PC is over a minute. The actual bootup is quick, it's the logon. then once you hit the desktop you still have to wait a good few minutes after everything loaded before you can start using anything. Same idea at work, and on most windows machines.

My Ubuntu HTPC, about 10 seconds and it's ready to watch a movie. Shutdown is 2 seconds. I'd love to see windows do that. :awe:
