I know it essentially comes down to what my ears like, but I was wondering what are some speakers that others recommend for cars. They would just be replacing stock speakers.(4x6s in the front and 6x9s in the back)

I'd say around $300 between the fronts and rears would be my idea of inexpensive.

I'd say Infinity or Clarion. Both are pretty cheap and definitely better than stock.

Too bad you don't have 6.5" fronts. Otherwise you could get the CDT Audio CL-61a from thezeb.com for $150 (worth much more).

And no matter what you get, power them with a separate amp, not the head unit.

Depending on car, stock system is pretty good. Otherwise... take Howard's advice, it's always a better idea to run it from a seperate amp rather than head unit. When I had my 12" subs I had an amp only for the subs, but still had the stock head unit and no amp for the speakers. The bass was pretty good but overall it wasn't balanced the way I'd have liked it and the sound quality wasn't nearly as good as it could have been if I had gotten another amp for the speakers + a head unit.

don't listen to them. If 300 is your budget, go to walmart, I saw a Pioneer stereo set there that had a head unit, 6x9 rears and 6.5" fronts for like $200, that'll get you a good head unit and ok speakers, then spend the remaining $100 on the 4x6 and adapter for the stereo.

Changing the speakers will help with sound, but the head unit is still crap in almost all cars.

I ran a system in my old Mirage. Pioneer DEH-3000, Infinity ref 6.5" in the front doors, kenwood tweets on the a-pillar, Alpine 6x9's on the back deck and 2 fosgate punch 10's in the trunk powered by a 350W amp.

The speakers inside the cabin ran off of head unit power. That car was loud, I could turn it up so loud that you couldn't sit in the car. And it was clear as day.
