I'm serious though. I have played online in the past. And I just simply get nothing out of it.

Nothing beats an enemy that can "think" - and better yet, if the other team actually works as a team.

With single player games, most of the time the computer artificial intelligence (AI) is just plain terrible. The scripts are just that, "scripts" - once you see how the enemy is going to react, difficulty drops.

With multiplayer games, there is no AI, there is no script, every game is different.

It seems like when games are new the multi is a lot more fun, but once people exploit everything (like speed scoping in MW2) and start watching replays it loses all it's fun and the game for me is obsolete.

I really prefer playing with friends, back in the Raven Shield days I played on a clan that was all adults with daytime jobs so that was a total blast, I should look for a group of guys like that again.

I go on MP just to social, I dont even do anything other then chat in all the MP games Im on.
If I do play I prefer SP, No network faults,Hacks or morons.

Maybe because every time I have tried to play an RTS online I have been raped mercilessly.

Then again, I am bad at RTSs. All of them.
I'm with you.. it "might" be one thing if the match making in these games actually worked. The few times I tried Dawn of War 2 online I was level 1 and it matched me with guys level 40 or so with high win ratio's.. boy that was fun.. I learned nothing, had zero fun and it was over in no time... if you look up GAME in the dictionary, the experience I have with MP RTS is not defined.

I have a very difficult time understanding why anyone would want to play RTS games against AI once they have a good grasp of the game.

Oh, I missed that bolded part. Yeah. I guess in my case (and for many others), getting a good grasp of the game never happens. I've never felt like I've been good at any RTS and I probably never will. The best I can do is beat hard computer opponents, but that varies greatly depending on the game.

You're not the only person with that sentiment. What we really need for RTS is some sort of player skill matching system. Here's a thread I put up at another forum that may be of interest to some people:

Does a "Fear" of Experiend (or Pro) Players Keep You from Playing Sins Online?

I've heard that some RTSs now actually have good skill matching systems. The problem is that enough of those skill matching systems were badly done or easily glitched in the past, so if you've been burned by them, you won't want to try again even if the system truly has improved.

I remember playing a couple Warcraft III games years ago... that went something like this:

As a general rule, AI opponents are predictable and playing against the AI gets boring after a while, especially for strategy games. When you play against the AI, your opponent always has one hand tied behind its back.

I can't talk about Call of Duty, but back when there were arena-style FPS games (Unreal Tournament '99, Quake 3), online multiplayer offered a very different and superior experience from that of single player to the point where the games felt less like silly, disposable computer games and more like online cybersports. Playing in a 5 on 5 capture-the-flag game with only human players on voice comm with assigned positions is an experience that cannot be replicated in single player.

In short: AI opponents are retarded.

AI can be given better aim or a stronger economy, but it will never be able to surprise you or do something original or out-think you

Very good. 🙂

I'm pretty sure this is the exact answer I needed. Explains a lot really. The thread title didn't make much since...but your answer fit exactly that of an opinion. And you explained it perfectly.

I guess I may have been looking for reasons to try MP a lot more. And your reasons, was just the info I haven't even considered.

Thanks dude.

Let me add that online newbies do need to be patient. Games against real people play differently than against AI and you just have to suck it up and learn how the game is played, but it's worth it. After all, if skill and knowledge of the game weren't an issue then you wouldn't have anything to really aspire to. People need to try to take pleasure in the act of watching themselves improve.
