After reading some posts, it looks like most of you guys say its BS. Is that true? I have been thinking about trying to get it.

Edit: I am a high school jr.

IF you are 15-20 then its great.

If you are out of highschool and want something usefull then its good for a entry level job. otherwise go to college.

I recommend it as a starting point to see if you really want to do IT.

I passed the A + hardware exam but i failed the software side. I still need to retake the software to be fully certifiied.

WASTE of time imo.

Anyone I meet/have met that have it used it to show they know something about pc's, when in fact they knew little to nothing.

Was thinking about getting it over the summer, work and college now I don't have time. I got a book for it though. Anyone give an estimate about what kind of pay it could get you?

Maybe not because my current summer job as a lifeguard is just cushy as hell.:)

what are the costs involved in getting one? Can you just schedule a test and take it?

They recently revamped the A+ test and supposedly it's a little harder than it was.

Microsoft also just came out with their cert which is somewhat similar to the A+, it is geared towards the help desk/tech support market. I can't recall the exact acronym off hand but it's something along the lines of MCDST or something like that.

You can buy vouchers online and take them at any testing location center in your area. They average cost for both tests is what... like $200.00? $100.00 each test, I think, somewhere along those lines.

I used it as filler on my resume. Surprisingly, my first career employers were so impressed with my resume they gave me a nice salary.

If anything, it shows that you're competent to go out and do something on your own. It also proves you're half technical, hell any of you monkeys could say you're proficient at computers. Half are probably lying. A+ shows you've proved your technical monkey skills.

In all seriousness it's good filler for your resume. If I had it on my resume I'm sure I'd get my foot in the door to a bunch of places that I have applied to. However, I don't and just alone me claiming to know Windows at an advanced level doesn't help much.

With ~8 years playing around with computers, CompUSA said that A+ needed one for consideration. Got the cert, not the job.
Sadly they cracked down on buying discount vouchers without "training". I paid $130 for both vouchers. Still in college with an AA going for my BS.

If you really want filler, go to a Wallet site that has coupon codes.. MS beta certs are free, provided you know some code.
I am waiting to see if I passed the MCDST exams (New MS cert, equiv to A+) for free,
