What is your opinion of the 1996 Ford Taurus GL?

I am in the market for a used automobile and I would like to by locally...just about the only thing available is this car.

Any opinions?

Thanks.

I have a 98 Ford Contour (purchased 4/99), and from my experience and talking to other people I highly doubt I'll go back to Ford with my next car. I got around 10 recalls in the first 6-10 months that I had the car.

My wife drives a 96 Sable. It is the same exact car as the Taurus. Just slap a different name plate on there. The point is we bought it used about 18 months ago. Haven't had a problem yet. I would recommend it. Never had a problem w/ my 96 ranger either. Good Luck.

Taurus' tend to be rickety and the drive train isn't very solid. But they put up with old age/ abuse pretty well

I was 15 and loathed mustangs...except for the classic.
Today's mustangs are what mom and dad give to little johnny as a graduation present before he goes off to college...that way he can have a nice car to show off to all his new friends.

New mustang isn't all that great performance wise, they run low 14's stock in GT form, an LS1 Camaro runs 13's. Camaros rule the road:)

It's not a bad car for the money but then again I don't really like american cars except for the classics. Like the Shelby Cobra :D ! Or the '69 Mustang.

It's either the '96 Ford Taurus or a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic (man it's ugly).

What should I do?

Go with the Taurus, I have one and it a 1996 GL. Its been a great car an no problems at all. Drive good and ride good, and they must be good cars because there a lot of them on the roads. I'm 43 and have owed many car an trucks and I'm staying with FORD.

Ford is a piece. 1996 means you will probably get 3 more years of service before repairs start costing more than the car. But it beats a 1991 caprice, I think.

Check the cooling system. 96 Tauruses had a HORRIBLE problem with bad water flow, which caused the coolant to get EXTREMELY brown, thereby causing many other problems. Ford had 2 different owner notification call-backs on it, but they don't fix the problem permanently unless the engine was replaced. We are seeing quite a few of them back now a couple of years after the program has expired.
The brown coolant problem wreaks havoc on the cooling system, causing many problems from water pumps to headgaskets.
They also had a few tranny problems (foward clutch piston related), but no more than any other year Taurus. Every year Taurus ever made has had some trans. problems (along with every other FWD, American made car).
If you don't have the coolant problem, the engine is very solid, and the car should last a few years.

Get a Chevy!!! Corvettes rule as far as performance cars go but for what it sounds like what you want you may wish to try a Monte Carlo or even a Honda Civic or Accord if ya dont get a chevy.

A friend of mine is driving a Taurus which has 130K on it and he's putting quite a bit miles on it now. It's a little older than '96. Another friend has a '97 and has had no problems with it. They are generally solid cars, but like others, certain years may have their issues. I think alot of the 3.8's are having head-gasket problems. At least that is the case in the Windstar minivans, which share basically the same drivetrain as the Taurus. Also, the Windstars are having transmission problems as well, but I am not sure if it has carried over to the Taurus.
