What is your most "far-fetched" commute to date?

Mlast post as branch manager for a distribution branch saw me riding from one town to the next.

51 miles on single, then 4-carriage freeway. That used to take approx 45mins cos it was a popular stretch.

I landed a new post, less pay but I walk 5mins to work - 3 blocks! This I set up... For three months I was ecstatic!

The mfc expanded and relocated 30 miles away, this week, it takes me f 55mins in my car, and 45mins on my bike!

I already took a +-35% paycut to live 5mins walk away!

I used to travel 33 miles to work each day. It took me about an hour on the freeway to drive this distance and even more on Thursday and Friday afternoons. I started car pooling with coworkers 3 days a week and taking the train to within 9 miles of work and riding my bike in from there.

Now I live 10 miles from where I work and it takes me about 20 minutes to drive in...maybe 30 minutes on a rough traffic day. I ride my bike to work twice a week though and it takes me about 40-45 minutes and I get a great training ride in. It's all good now.

Long commutes suck ass.

People here drive ~ 100 miles each way EVERY day into the San Francisco/San Jose area.
I've driven as much as 130 miles each way on a daily basis(and worked 10-12 hours daily, 6 days/week)...sux, but you go where you're sent sometimes...

when I was going to school it took me 1:40+ each way. that was grueling. I ended up skipping most of my classes because of it.

In California it's common for people to drive 100+ miles each way to work because they work in say San Fransisco and live in Sacramento or work in Downtown LA and live in the Boonies where it's cheap to live.

my uncle commutes 90 mins each way into boston every day. granted, its on a commuter train, which is more relaxing, but thats still 3 hrs a day.

6 month contract. Worked from home on Friday and week-ends. Ended up with 50-60 hr work weeks.

Sophomore year (two years ago), first time in my engineering co-op job (and first time at a big corporation, too), I drove 65.8 miles each way so I could live at my parents' house (this was over the summer.) I decided to come in at 7:00 AM; this meant that I woke up each day at 4:20 AM and got back around 5:00 PM.

It took some getting used to; it also completely ruined my driving skills. I got used to driving while mostly asleep, so now I'm always slightly out of it when I drive. I had to, on occasion, prop my eyelids open with one hand so my eyes didn't shut. It's not that I fall asleep, but my eyes just close down on me.

P.S.: how can you get there ten minutes faster on your bike???!

When I live in the SW quadrant of the city going up to NE it takes me 15-20 minutes on the highway. Now I've moved up to the NE it still takes me roughly 15 minutes. But the difference is it's now city street travel versus highway travel before, and believe me I'd rather take the city roads anyday. That highway is notorious for accidents, everybody and their grandma hits that one and only highway from south to north of the city, and when accident happens, start calling into work saying you'll be late about 45min to an hour depending on how far south you live. I'm glad I moved.

The city is just growing way too fast for the roads to handle and it isn't built fast enough.

Those who travel McKnight in Calgary know it's bad, but still bearable....for now.

I spend an hour and a half each day driving to and from work. Talking to the SO about it earlier, we discussed the possibility of moving closer to the city, but we enjoy where we live and are already attached to our house. On top of that, they have just built two new schools nearby and should we be blessed with children in the future, it would be a very convenient for them and us as well.

IIRC, my longest commute was about 125 miles. I do remember leaving my house at 6:00 AM in order to be there at 8:30 AM. Fortunately, the drive was almost entirely on country highways, and there was little traffic. I wouldn't be able to handle a commute of that length in heavy traffic.

My longest actual commute was about 40 miles each way, but the miles were on I-95 in Southern Connecticut & depending on the time I had to go it could take up to 2 hours which was pretty crappy... I was happy to see that contract end.

Of course back when I drove for a living I would do 3000+ miles a week all the time.
