Just trying to get a basic understanding of what people are seeing using SMB to copy files?

WUSB600N RALINK 2x2 usb stick to pc
Buffalo WZR 2.4ghz only router on channel 2 40hz wide

-43db and 300mbps (drops to 270 sometimes even 243 but always jumps right back to 300mbps might be interference from the neighbors 20+ ap's in distance).

Without going to 5ghz ( i need the range) - is it possible to get 450mbps on 2.4ghz?

Anyways if could tell me what your sustained average transfer over SMB on 802.11n 2.4ghz is that would be great. If you are using channel bonding that is really what i'm looking for.

I suspect with less channels and so much interference that seeing 20MB/s (megabytes) might not be possible without moving to 450mbps on 2.4ghz.

I do not wish to use 5ghz because i will be using a high gain directional eventually to go a longer distance.

thanks in advance. Copy a big divx or something and hit more details to tell me your speed.

2.4ghz but if you have 5ghz too - post both so i can get a comparison - also post the rate that task manager shows during the copy from on each band. obviously if you are doing 450 or 600 on 5ghz that would be not fair to compare to 300 on 2.4ghz.

thanks!

Why channel 2? The only non-overlapping channels are 1,6,11. Anything else is going to cause more interference.

check the diagram out. you run a 20 and 40 at the same time with some spacing between each that soaks the entire 2.4ghz band up. between channels you have to have some space to avoid bleed.

you know the atheros chipsets can do some really nasty stuff like run up to 2.6ghz and 5-6.1ghz to but that would be not legal in the usa. probably could fit a 20+40+40 or two 40's on 2.4ghz but again that would not be legal in the usa. maybe other countries.

so here's what i got..

16.2MB/s copy from NAS 1TB to WUSB600N -> x18-m
16.1MB/s copy from x18-m WUSB600N back to NAS 1TB

100% repeatable. about 25feet range.

not that great huh? you think i would see 32-40MB/s with 5ghz?

Is your file transfer using TCP? If so, those speeds are about right.

yah smb over tcp. i'm curious how much more you can get with 5ghz really. I know you can triple or quad bond with 5ghz but the distance factor really has me bummed.
