And why?

I havn't found one yet. I wen't from Michigan to Texas to Georgia. I won't even start on Michigan.. Texas was too hot.. So far I prefer Georgia but wouldn't mind a change of scenery.

I've been in 41 so far, though many of those were for very limited lengths of time (1 day or less).

Washington and Oregon are at the top, though both still have their issues. The weather is perfect for me, the people are laid back, the scenery is unbeatable, etc.

The far northeast is next (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont), though I'm less fond of the people there than in the Pacific NW, and cost of living is FAR higher in most cases.

I 'believe' I would really like Maine and Alaska, but so far haven't had time to prove that.

Some of the mountains are next: Colorado, and to a lesser extent Montana and Wyoming (I'd have to be VERY selective about location on those last two).

States I've actually lived in, or stayed in for extended periods, and found to be utter and complete ass: California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, New Jersey, Maryland, Kansas.

States I didn't like (or don't like on principle), but weren't total and complete ass (just mostly ass): North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nevada (only like at all because of LV/Reno), Idaho, New York (mostly upstate, and the cultural offerings in the city), DC (ONLY because of the museums and history).

Anything else was more or less neutral, or too short to form any opinion.

My sample size is small. I have only lived in Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. They are pretty much identical, save for a change in scenery. Mississippi has the edge on food and Tennessee by far has the best scenery.

But, based on people that I have spoken with, what I have read and my brief travels through there, I would say that Texas would be the ideal state to live in.

I have lived in California most of my life, Missouri and Kansas at the moment.
I liked Colorado from vacation there.
I think i would love Oregon, Washington, Vermont, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Maine.
I would probably like Oregon the best if i could afford it though.

this thread needs a poll. Make sure to include all territories.

I am voting for Palmyra. yes the beaches are covered in plastic and there's the danger of things exploding randomly, but at least there are no annoying neighbors.

And if there are you just chop them up and stuff them in a metal box and dump them in the harbor.

I've lived in FL, NJ and NH. I've been up and down the east coast, WI, MI, AZ and NV.

Arizona FTW.

Lived here all my life; never really liked it.
:(
We went back there when our daughter graduated from Army basic training. We liked it to a degree. It was clean and the people were friendly. The roads were in good shape and there wasn't tons od trash all over the place.
But we were just there a few days.
Oh and the iced tea sure was sweet.

I've lived in a lot of states in my life.

For the most part, I liked at least some aspect of each.

My favorites are at complete opposites of the spectrum...Kahleeforneeya and Wyoming.

Kahleeforneeya was great for many years. Lots of work, taxes weren't oppressively high, no snow. Prices (cost of living) here is higher than in many places (housing) but for consumer goods, no worse than anywhere else. With the current high unemployment rate, high illegal immigrant population, and related high crime rate, the quality of life here is going downhill fast. (still better than some places I've been...but if things don't turn around here soon...)

Wyoming on the other hand had no taxes, work was sporadic, but it was the best hunting and fishing I've ever seen, and I've lived in most of the western states. The people were friendly (but very conservative) prices weren't bad, and except for having three seasons (July, August, and Winter) the overall quality of life was very good.
