I started back in the day on Red Alert on (of all things) the PS1. Since then I've played RA 2, CnC Generals (and mods), and SupCom Forged Alliance (and mods). I just got back from a 3 month internship in Swaziland and am looking forward to picking up FA again. By now it's old and its player base has shrunk, but its base seems stable and it even has a healthy modding community.

I've tried older style stuff like Starcraft and Empire Earth but I just couldn't get into it. Stuff like the inability to zoom and unzoom the map for a sense of scale, SC's 12-unit-at-once selection limitation, and other such things made it feel cramped and micro-heavy for my taste. I also prefer resources that don't deplete so I can use patient strategies if I want to, something else FA has.

Rise of Nations. Great mash up between AoE and Risk. More combat oriented, less tedious resource gathering. Mods were always fun. Too bad the sequel jumped the shark.

Age of Mythology for me. I never play the single player of any RTS, online multiplayer only. I just wish more people played DM in Age of Mythology. Massed Myrmidons ruled. The Rise of Rome xpack for Age of Empires I comes in a close second.

Starcraft 2 is pretty nice, and takes up alot of my attention these days. Never played SC1 (gasp!) though I did start playing RTSs with Warcraft 2.

Age of Empires (probably my fav)
Age of Empire 2 (almost as good)
Starcraft
Rise of Nations
Red Alert 2

That's about all I enjoyed. Didn't like the warcraft games and I find the modern RTS games too complicated. I just liked the old "gather resources and fight" model. Does Starcraft 2 bring that back?

Age of Mythology for me as well. I wish they'd develop some sort of sequel to it, that game had everything I wanted. While I like Starcraft 2, I already got bored with it, probably because I'm always going for the exact same sequence of build at the start.

AoE: The Rise of Rome Multi player on the Zone had me from 7th grade through Sophomore year of college. AoE II and the rest were okay, I just liked the first one better.

Played a lot of AoE but not the 1st.
The 2nd was in my opinion better. Remember some nights when there were games lasting even 8 hours... Those were the times.

I loved RoN. I think I won more games without fighting than I did with fighting battles. I remember one particular game where I was Russia and the enemy just couldn't handle fighting on my land. The attrition was just too much! I ended up winning simply by expanding to most of the map.
