What is your favorite fully modular PSU?

Also, what PC enclosure are you using it with?

Here is one (SFX form factor) that looks really good:

CORSAIR SF Series SF450 450W 80 PLUS GOLD Active PFC Haswell Ready SFX SFX12V Micro ATX Full Modular Power Supply, $89.99 FREE Shipping

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139156

92mm fan, 37.5amps on the single 12v rail, full modular cables with two 6+2 PCIe connectors.

jonny guru review:

Score of 9.9 out of 10:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=483

P.S. This can be used in a case that takes ATX PSU via an adapter like the following:

Can I just ask why would I or anyone have a "favorite modular PSU"? Seems like an odd favorite to have. Modular PSU's come in all sorts of price categories, sizes, brand names, efficiency ratings, external looks, etc. so it's not only difficult but rather pointless to pick a favorite. I'd rather just pick whatever suits a particular build.

Also your second question implies you can't have a favorite PSU without owning it first.

Ok, what modular PSUs are your favorites?

Do any of them have custom cable lengths available to make a special fit for very small enclosures?

During an internet search of "fully modular psu with custom cable lengths" I found this interesting discussion about modifying the wiring harness of a Seasonic fully modular Flex ATX PSU (300W, 80 plus gold) for use with video card:

https://hardforum.com/threads/the-seasonic-ssp-300sug-fully-modular-150mm-flexatx-psu.1897802/

Here is the product listing on Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151157

25amps on the 12v rail and 80 plus Gold for $39.99 free shipping seems like a good deal.

Two things I wonder about:

1. Case selection.

2. Noise (considering it has 40mm fan).

Here are some Silverstone modular cables for SFF systems (they only work with Silverstone modular PSUs though):

http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=438&area=en

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812162043

■ Significantly reduce cable clutter in smaller cases & systems

■ Compatible with SilverStone modular PSUs

■ 90˚ and 180˚ type SATA connectors included

■ Six PCI-E connectors included

■ All cables made with flexible flat arrays

■ Supports slim optical drives with mini-SATA connector

The original PP05 cable set created by SilverStone in 2008 was a revelation for enthusiasts of small form factor computing. Besides being made shorter for smaller cases like its predecessor, the PP03 (launched in 2005), it also introduced the idea of a cable set in which users can keep for multiple upgrades. SilverStone’s continued commitment to using the same power supply connectors ensured that PP05 purchased in 2008 are still perfectly usable in 2013 and beyond. To improve this handy set of cables further, SilverStone created the PP05-E, the next evolution in power supply cables made for small form factor. To improve compatibility and ease of installation, the PP05-E is made with more flexible cables that allows for much tighter bends than traditional cables. This eliminates component interference problems that often plaque small form factor builds. To further save precious space, PP05-E’s cables are also designed in flat arrays for unprecedented flexibility. As before, the PP05-E are made to match SilverStone modular PSUs, so useful extra cables and connectors are added to help enthusiasts use as few cable as possible (dual PCI-E connector cables) or to connect with the more popular slim optical drives (mini-SATA).

I can't say that I have any favorite PSU. If it works, it works.

I am expecting my EVGA Supernova G2 to come today, so I suspect it will become my favorite fully modular PSU. :)

Thanks for bringing this PSU to my attention, the 550W version scores 10 out 10 in the following Jonny Guru review:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=440

Summary

What more can one say about these units that hasn't been said? The score speaks for itself, really. This thing has the best ripple control I've seen, it's efficient, and it's cheap compared to what little competition it actually does have. I seriously cannot think of one thing to complain about on this little guy. Yeah, having three total PCI-E connectors is a little odd, but that's no complaint for a unit this small. If you need to power two video cards, you're usually in need of something a little bigger than 550 watts.

The Good:

  • excellent voltage stability
  • beyond excellent ripple control
  • fully modular
  • affordable
  • lots of included goodies
The Bad:

  • nothing
The Mediocre:

  • nothing

Yes, that's one of the reasons I grabbed it. It goes in and out of sale sometimes plus you can get rebates for it on occasion. I know people have nabbed it for ridiculously low prices. There have been times the platinum P version is a few bucks less than the Gold.

Interestingly, I noticed the EVGA Hadron also uses what looks like a "Flex ATX type" PSU with a small fan (rated at 500W with 40amps on the 12v rail, 80 plus Gold):

I've installed the G2 and it's very nice. Cabling was high quality and long enough for the job. I'm assuming it's delivering nice clean power to the components. Dead silent and can't tell if the fan comes on when it does. Using ECO mode so fan won't go on until needed.

I've always read good things about the G2's but I haven't built a new rig from scratch in awhile.

If they are sale I would go that route myself I imagine. Have always read Jonny Guru reviews for PSU's have for a long time when I'm looking for one.

I have always been an Antec PSU fanboi myself, but the ones I have are Delta or SeaSonic built I guess to begin with.

EVGA has better customer support than most companies I've found over time.

I think the G2 is based off a Super Flower design that is highly regarded. You really can't go wrong with either Super Flower or Seasonic platforms.

Had a G2 that started killing GPU's so I was looking at some PSU's not that long ago and if you have top money I'd say the Seasonic Prime is the absolute best right now, has a 80+ Titanium rating although is expensive ofc.

Ooff, what was going on with that evil G2? Did EVGA take care of that situation for you? If my G2 fried my 1070 I'd be kinda pissed.

Seasonic would be the best choice here. Most vendors (Corsair, EVGA, Coolermaster) actually don't make their own power supply units. They outsource the manufacturing process to Seasonic and other
manufacturers, and add their margin on top of the margin charged by Seasonic and other manufacturers. This is the reason why the power supply units sold directly from the manufacturer tends to be cheaper than other name brands.

True. But, some companies do work with Seasonic and other makers on custom designs and configurations you won't see with other brands. I believe EVGA and Corsair both have some involvement in the design of some of their units. I've looked hard but not been able to find any definitive list of PSUs and which are just interchangeable Seasonic units, for example, and which are one-off designs specific to that model. Maybe someone smarter than me can expand on this. I don't even know if the "custom design" by the folks at Corsair, etc, is really of much significance. It might be "hey, can you move that capacitor a tiny bit so we can slope the sides of the PSU for style reasons?"

One thing I've read here that even the same essential PSU sold by EVGA and Corsair have totally different fan curves and profiles and there are some differences with the shielding and insulation inside. Shrug.

My first modular ever... circa 2006 or so

41VJTYN24BL.jpg

cheapo ultra x connect 500w... cutting edge for my NF7-S Athlon XP machine, but not even a good paperweight today. Actually still works, but oh so ugly.

Wow that is tacky. That is definitely from one of the ugliest phases in computer building and accessories trends over the years.

Agreed. To give it very little credit though it did what I needed it to and mine was a glossy black. Also tacky, but not faux chrome tacky lol

I kinda miss that phase though actually... thought I was a boss with my single core XP clocked at 2.8ghz. Then the duos came out and rained all over my parade
