I was thinking on the way into work today about the different cars I admired for various reasons and I found myself searching for a car from the 80?s that stood out to me as a special or significant vehicle. I?ve thought more about after getting to work and came up with a short list.

1985 Ford Mustang GT ? Brought the muscle back to muscle cars
1985 Mazda RX-7 ? The last of a sporty car design
1987 Buick Grand National ? Any V6 car that can beat a Corvette is OK in my book.
1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA ? One of the first luxury muscle cars
1989 Nissan 300 ZX Turbo ? I believe this car sparked the import sport car market.

What and why are your favorite cars from the 80?s?

They didn't stop producing the RX-7 until the mid ninties...and the 80's versions were nowhere near as good as the 90's versions.

I think he meant that it was the last of the 1st gen RX-7's, which was very minimalist and simple. The later cars had more luxury to them.

1993 RX7 was hardly a luxury car... minimal comforts flat out performance and balance..

The late 80's Supras were an awesome car. Toyota Racing Development release four separate performance kits for the turbo charged inline six capable of increasing the horsepower to 415-450. I worked on several of these cars installing these kits and I can tell you that after the stage four kit, 415 to 450hp, those cars were just scary to drive, and a lot of fun too. 😀

the supra wasn't a supra until 87 (86 and a half if you truly want to get technical). I prefer the taillights from the 87 to those of the 88 and 89. my buddy had an 87 supra turbo. he put on a full cat back exhaust with freeflow muffler, 2 - 2.5 inch wide iirc. always kept that car in tip-top shape, man that thing was awesome. he now has a 91 mr2 turbo and I think he has more fun in that car.

There's one of those in really sorry shape that's been parked at a gas station near my house for a couple months now - looks like a 91 or 92. Front bumper is gone, and paint is mottled white/primer. Someone broke into it a few weeks ago - the hatch is busted open and passenger window is out. There's one of the orange police "abandoned vehicle" stickers on it.

If I had a place to keep it, I would consider tracking down the owner and picking it up as a project - although I don't know what all is wrong with it (aside from the obvious). Someone could probably buy it for next to nothing, if they wanted. Kind of sad, really.
