Virus software only scans for KNOWN virii, and it is a HYOOGE drain on system. Ick. I would rather back up and reinstall any day.

BTW I know this is not for everyone, but if you reinstall your OS more than once every 2-3 months, than virus software is a waste of time in my opinion.

gnogus: But not all viruses screw up your system. What about things like BackOrrifice? I sure don't want somebody poking around on my system even until the next reinstall (which after I went from Win98 to Win2000 reinstall frequency went from 1-2 months to whenever I get a new hard drive 🙂).

Been using McAfee, it has caught 4 virus 🙂 🙁 Thats good becuase it caught them, but bad becuase I got the anti-virus proggie too late, already cuased damage 🙁

But now I use McAfee and ZoneAlarm 🙂 No virus in a good while so far 🙂

i like norton because i've used macfee to scan my drive after I thought i had a virus and it didn't find anything. So i installed norton and it found the virus.

I have used McAfee for a long time and I like it. I don't ever pay to extend my upgrade periods. If you watch the ads you will eventually get it free or close to it after rebate. I pick them up when I see it on sale and I always end up using it sometime.

MGMorden: That's what Proxies, and routers, and firewalls are for (Sygate), but even then, if you are going to be on the net, you CAN be hacked, no matter what.
After a certain point, it's paranoia😛

If you don't download anything (and I do mean ANYTHING), and use an old traditional email format program w/o ever executing attachments, then I agree viral software is not really needed. Otherwise, you would be putting your system at serious risk. You could end up losing all your data and/or spending all day trying to figure out what the problem isw w/o a virus prog. Plus, as someone mentioned, a trojan would run silently in the background which is downright scary if you have broadband.
