In NorCal, we've got three classifications of hippies. The "original hippies", people who were there in the sixties, did the sit ins, drugs, free love, etc, and who still live that way, shoeless, selling flowers on corners, etc. They live in Humboldt, Arcata, and in Mendocino.
Then there are the "hippies-turned-yuppie", the folks who were in the movement in the sixties and seventies but were lured away by middle-class jobs. They like to still think they're connected to their hippie roots, and they vote liberal or green, but they live their middle class lives without too much deviation from the mean. They live in Willits and they're the reason we've got medical marijuana (and the reason Willits is the centre of the "Emerald Triangle").
Third, there are the "new-age hippies". These are the young kids, teens through late twenties, who like to think of themselves as "free spirits" and are into the crystals and gunk, picking up what they like from the original hippies and considering themselves to be liberated, nature-conscious, and higher beings. They live in Santa Cruz, and they're the reason the city is officially a "no-hate" zone.
