Other than Good Morning America, what is wrong with this picture?

When did that red start and is it on all inputs/channels or just that one?

Looks like the red drive or red cut off control is broken or set too high.
Its basically like turning up just the color red , leaving the other alone if its the drive control.
Cut off determines how much color goes with each pixel.

Nope, it's hooked up through coax.

It has been going on for about a year or so, it does it randomly (ie on again off again) on all channels, don't know if we've tried other inputs though.

Basically, my folks just put up with it and bang the back of the TV periodically (which really does clear it up, for a while anyway), but I'm back for break and too lazy to get up and bang the back, so I'm looking for a more permanent solution

As one who has done many tv sets in my day, that is a symptom of
Missing Green Color ...since you say it can be fixed by bumping the
set, I would remove the back and very carefully examine all the solder
joints on the little circuit board, mounted on the neck of the CRT .. in most
TV sets, the color outputs transistors are mounted there & a bad solder
joint is the most likely suspect. If no transistors are there, follow the wires
back to the main board, and check the connections in the immediate area.
It can also be a short in one of the Color Guns inside the picture tube, in
which case, the only fix is replace the Tube or the whole TV set. Be careful
and work with the plug disconnected.

You need to take the tv in for service.
You probably have a cracked solder joint.
Does the problem occur more the longer the tv is on ?

I don't advise you to keep using it with the problem .
If one of the connections is on the i2c bus, you can cause permament damage to the microprocessor or eeprom.
Its a common problem with tv that have bad solder joints.

It doesn't (that I know of) ever do it when you first turn it on, so yeah I guess you could say it does it more the more that it has been on.

And this is a flat panel, probably an LCD, maybe plasma, but definately not a CRT, and like I said we've been using it for a year already. I know we need to have it looked at by a professional, but it has already been taken in once (it got laid flat when we first got it, before we knew that's bad) and it was a real pain, so like I said my folks are simply putting up with it for now.

I suppose what I'm really looking for is some kind of ballpark price to fix it. Does this sound like a $500 problem, $150, what?
