This happened to me last night.

<rant>
So I pull into a shell station to top off the tank on my motorcycle before beginning the 80 mile ride back to Birmingham. As I'm finishing up I notice the guy at the pump in front of me. He's having trouble getting the pump to accept his credit card. But thats not what draws my attention. No... I'm focusing on the LIT cigarette in this guys mouth!

As I'm as I start to pull out I move up closer to him,
Me: "Hey man. You might want to put that out before you start pumping gas."
Him: "Man F- you! Why you whiteys always think you gots to tell me what to do?"
Me: "Look smoking that here is dangerous. You're likely to blow up yourself and others"
Him: "Shut the F- up. I'll do what I want. You better get out here before I do something."
Me: "whatever" *rides off*

Now I don't know how it suddenly became a racial issue. I guess some might have seen it as a smoker VS non-smoker issue. Me? I saw it as a common sense issue. If this genius wants to self immolate be my guest. Just please... DO NOT collect your Darwin Award while I'm using the pump behind you! :|

it's alright... if an ash were to fall and the whole station blew up, he would just look at the flames and say, "OH NO YOU DI INT" and the explosion would get scurred and he would be fine.

mythbusters did the "will cigarette blow up gas" myth
unless the gas is being vaporized in an enclosed space, the chance of ignition is low

It's a lot lower if you remove a cigarette from the equation. :p

I agree, but with the way he was reacting WTF should the OP have done? The guy sounded like he was crazy. I guess I would have gotten the station attendant....

If you want to get technical about it the chances of him lighting up while in the car causing a distraction while smoking and getting into an accident is much higher than the cigarette causing any sort of incident while at the gas station.

The chance of my house catching fire is pretty low. I still have smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and an exit route.

Plus, its not so much the vaporized gas that concerns me, its the gas that could be spilled onto the ground and then the asshat dropping the cig. Chances are that won't cause a large fire/explosion either but you can bet your ass I will be running in the other direction if I see it happen.

At a station that's up to code - reality is that not all stations are up to code, and the flowback option might not exist, meaning the entire tank could be at risk of blowing up.

Either way, there's still a possibility.

I live in the same area now and commute 60+mi/day one way. I've seen people do that simply out of habit, but most are pretty careful about it. That guy just sounds pretty crazy. Racism goes both ways, sucks you had to deal with a person like that.

I agree that it's damn near impossible to ignite gasoline in liquid form with a lit cigarette. Hell, you can drop a lit match into a pool of gas and it will fizzle out, I've done it. It's the mere fact that this man feels safe with a lit cancer-stick around flammable liquids that makes him a retard. I don't care how much scientific data shows it cannot happen (which by the sound of it, he's never come into contact with anyway), it's still a testament to your logical prowess if you choose not to light up while you are gassing up.

... Retard...

Would've been better if you asked for a favor instead of more or less telling him what to do:

"Hey, buddy can you do me a favor and not lite that until I'm out of the blast area? Just be a second, please."

Yea of course gasoline is not flammable. I guess arsonists forgot that.

Had it been reversed, color-wise, and he said "why all you n-words always telling me what to do"... what would the response have been?

Fact is, the guy was racist* yet it wasn't a big deal. Had a white person been racist, all hell would have broke loose.

*I don't consider is racist... but I also am not a pussy.

The actual reversal would be "why all you blackies always telling me what to do".

Yup, it's racist.

The reason for the so-called "double standard" is that ultimately, this is a white man's world...by-product of the colonial era. As such, a white person being racist has overtones of implied inferiority and scorn. Another race being racist against whites (at least in the US) has overtones of bitterness, resentment, and maybe even jealousy. Note that I'm talking about how the person who HEARD the racist remarks will think, not speculating on the motivations of the person who SAID them, which can often be quite different.

Honestly, which is more offensive, you thinking the other person is calling you a lower human being, or you thinking the other person is resentful of what you have? I can totally understand why a white person being a racist is taken more seriously in this country.
