What is wrong with my burner?? Update...

here is my setup:

athlon 1GHz
512MB PC133 Ram
iwill m/b
2 x 30GB 7200 HDDs
1 x 12x10x32 iomega cdrw
1 x 16x pioneer dvd drive

i have it setup so the hdds are on ide0, and the burner is master on ide1 and dvd is slave on ide1. lately i have noticed that wheneve i burn something, the led on the burner that normally blinks orange, has been stopping and changing to green. i have also noticed that when i use clonecd, it reports it as burning at 7x, not 12x like normal. i have tried many different types of medium and i always have the same problem. when i use nero, the buffer used to stay at 97%+, but now goes down to 20%+, maybe lower.

is it time for a new burner? let me also add that this is not a new setup (i am sure you can tell by the speeds and sizes), just a brand new problem...

The problem may be that it is an Iomega...or it could be the DVD drive. I can't tell you exactly what the problem is, but if you get a new burner, I'd have torecommend a Cyberdrive. Hadn't heard of them until a few months ago, but now have used 3 of their burners (the first one I got because it was a really good deal at newegg), and every one of them plays nice with other CD/DVD drives.

On a final note, DO NOT EVEN THINK about a Mitsumi if you plan on keeping the DVD drive...last Mitsumi CDRW I messed with, if it was not slave on the primary channel, the machine wouldn't even boot (even it was with the other CDROM on the secondary channel and the HD was single on the primary!).

i too usually stay away from iomega, but this was the rebadged plextor model. that is why i got it. the dvd seems to work excellent, no problems at all. ?

I would also stear clear of matsushita (usually sold as Panasonic OEM), I had the same problem as you with one, but instead of fixing it I just used it as an excuse to buy a faster one 😉

My Iomega does the same thing in XP. Works fine in 98 for some reason. Perhaps its a Windows NT-ish "feature"?

i have checked it and all is good. i went and bought a philips 24x12x40 and it works excellent. it must have been the burner. thanks for the info. i will probably by a asus and put this burner in my 2nd machine. again thanks again...

do you? why don't you give some feedback that is useful instead of b.s.?

Look around a bit. coolVariable has no useful feedback. Just ignore the little kids and concentrate on us grown-ups. 🙂

Glad you "fixed" it ( 😉 ), but have you checked to make sure DMA is enabled? Maybe you can check that when you get ready to re-use it.

i think it was dma 2. but i didn't change anything in the setting and i am the only who uses this machine. i might blow it out with compressed air and try it again, later. thanks for all the great help...

Why don't you take your attitude someplace else?
Dude, what's your problem. You did not even attempt to help so just shut it.

bob332, would it be possible to try the burner in a different computer?

Most DVD drives are only PIO mode 3 and therefore the 7X limit is probably about right. Try putting the Iomega on its own channel.

these 2 drives have been on the same channel for months, and just recently has this problem started. i put in another drive - a philips 24x12x40 and it works fine. thanks again for all the help

i have the burner on my desk currently, in the near future i wil be putting it in another machine to verify it is crap before i throw it away. another thing i noticed was that when it was in my machine and having problems, i looked at the cpu utilization and it was about 85% while burning. with this other drive in, the philips, it is around 3-5%.

haha that is hilarious. you didn't even bother trying to help. maybe you should take yourself somewhere else. don't need people like you on AT. just because people couldn't help you with your burner doesn't mean you have to take it out on others...

What software do you use for that Iomega of yours? I can only use CD Clone and in XP the normal burn mode.

I haven't been able to figure out if Nero supports this drive at all.
