This seafood noodle soup? The liquid is made with dashi stock that was made with dried anchovies.
I make dashi stock with dried kelp, dried mushrooms, and dried large anchovies. The anchovies are in that small metal container. I remove the head and the gut before I use it. I always have some dashi stock in the freezer along with beef bone stock.

Because they look gross and smell bad. I don't mind if they're mixed in with something like a sauce, but on their own?

Plain dried anchovies are bland and not worth eating as a snack raw. It's edible if you dip it in something like spicy chili sauce but only if you have no snack to eat with your beer. If you're that curious, you can try it for yourself. Amazon sells everything. Small and large dried anchovies, canned anchovies, canned sardines, canned oysters, etc. No need to leave your house.

Looks like Klingon food.Anchovies are nothing more than small fish. It's similar to sardines. And like sardines, it varies in size.
Here's side dish of small dried seasoned anchovies with walnut, egg battered fried Spam, and seasoned fishcakes. I guarantee even non fish lover would like this seasoned anchovy dish if they tried it. It's sweet, salty, and savory all in one. Same thing with fried Spam. People think Spam is gross when they have no idea how to cook it.
Well I am considering getting both dried and smoked anchovies, along with a tube or two of the paste, to check them out.

Tasty Klingon food.I love soups and broth and soups made with anchovy stock tastes refreshing and light. Anchovies make great fish stock. Here's another Klingon food. Fish egg soup made with anchovy stock. All these food pictures might not look appealing because I don't care about food presentation but the umami flavor and taste can't be beat.

Steakhouse we went to recently included 2 anchovies with the caesar salad I ordered. Absolutely delicious.

They included 2 anchovies on the salad itself? The anchovies should be used to make the dressing at your table side and not included whole on the salad. The best Caesar salad I ever had was in Mexico and they brought out all the salad ingredients on a cart and the waiter made the dressing right in front of me with the anchovies and egg yolks and assembled the salad. The romaine heart lettuce should be whole leaves and not chopped up.
