What is wrong with Azureus? - PIC included

Hi there,

I'm really confused about what's going on with Azureus.
I recently reinstalled everything on my computer, and got a fresh install of the newly released Azureus 2.5.0.0.

And now, I see something I've never seen before:

1) Although there are plenty of seeds for many torrents, I cannot download the files. They just hang in there and there's no download activity. Look at the last files in the upper window... How is it possible to have 10 seeds but no download?

2) Although I don't download anything, no matter if I force the download or not, and no matter how long I leave it running, the lower right sidebar statistics indicate that I've a 10 or 15 kb/s download speed??? Where is this coming from, if I'm not getting any files?

See the attached picture.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Should I downgrade to Azureus 2.4. x ?

I did that many times, it doesn't work.
I tried restarting the application and the computer altogether, it still doesn't work.
I tried removing and then re-adding the torrent to the queue... still nothing.

I'm clueless.

Not sure if this is your problem... but you need to make sure you define a port in Azureus and make sure it is not blocked by firewall and/or router. I think its like a tracking function and will increase speeds when opened up.

close enough

Azureus is written by hacks with an agenda against certain hardware firewalls. Just use the client that comes with BitTorrent (yes, it has a gui). Works great for me. Faster than Azereus or BitComet too.

just in case 🙂

homercles337, can you give me more details, please?
rudder, I'll take one more look at the settings, i'm pretty sure they're just what I've always had with the previous Azureus version... but I'll double-check just to make sure.

1) What's your line rated as? 1500/384? You have an awfully high upload rate and if you have a 1500/384 line then you're pretty much using all of it. The higher you upload, the harder it is to download files. Change it to 20 KB/s and see if it improves.

2) Try using the latest beta (Alternatively you can install the AZCVSUpdater plugin and have it automatically download the latest beta and insert it for you which is what I do).

It might be just overhead although you see more of that with it downloading then having an upload with nothing uploading.

How much ram that thing eat?

I ran some speed tests on my DSL line... I consistently get somewhere around 4.2 Mbps download and 700 kbps upload. These speeds should be fine, and again, it's the same line I've always been using.

The RAM consumption is FRIGGIN' HUGE! I have 1 GB, and Azureus, all by itself, gobbles around 250 MB (!)

I still don't understand why it reports I'm downloading something, albeit a modest speed, while all the torrents are totally zero...

(1) 250mb? Wow, havent used Azureus in almost a year, but damn!!! uTorrent FTW!

(2) You have way too many downloads going and too high of an upload (basically all of your connection). I have a 5mbps/512kbps (shared with torrenting roommates, which sucks), and I only run 1-2 torrents at a time. 6k/s max upload, 10k/s if people are gone/computers off. 40k/s seems a bit high. I would only set my max upload to like 70% of my absolute best theoretical upload (aka what your provider says you get) and that is only if I was the only one using the connection. When my roommate unknowningly set his upload to 40k/s of our 512k upload, the internet was pathetic. Speed/bandwidth test from my ISP showed our connection was like 2-3x faster than DIAL-UP. So trust me if you max the upload on an async connection like most cable and DSL, your whole connection is pretty much worthless.

Thus, I suggest dropping your upload to 20 k/s or less, making sure your connections amount is reasonable (this depends on your router, but I would keep it under 100 global, I've gotten 150+ k/s downloads with like 50 connections) limit, as well as keeping the max torrents at a time to maybe 2. And of course if your ports aren't forwarded or there are other major issues then you won't get any good speeds regardless.

I still use Azureus 🙂 its bloating fat boy but its still the best BT client 🙂 lots add on script and i made few some modification to make it have some features that I love about Torrent Flux sever client. utorrent is crappy /ugly looking client with basic option but good for people with P3 machine that have 64mb ram.

OK, here's an update...
I tried opening those files with uTorrent... I was successful in finishing one or two of them, but it appears that the others have seeing errors or something, because they keep on downloading stuff, but they can never be completed (for one of them the completion rate goes to 96.3%, then to 96.8%, then back to 95.5%)... So it might not be Azureus's fault.

For those using uTorrent - do you find that it consistently detects fewer seeds and peers than Azureus? It's this particular phenomenon (along with the lower download speeds I've been seeing again and again) that keeps me from using this otherwise little gem of a proggie...

only reports using 150mb here for my azureus on 1gb mem. hm

turn on encrypted transfers

some isps throttle bt

and yes while its a hog its still got the most features i use so azureus it is. gets more and more features with each patch

as for testing for weird behavior, just use a reliable private tracker.

and, by the way... i'm not downloading porn 🙂 what you see there are a couple of DVDs and mp3/FLAC concert recordings....

Yeah. My ISP restricts bittorent traffic to near dialup speeds. Thank god for azureus's built in encryption. Another thing you might want to try is chaging the port. The default port range for bittorrent is 6881-6889 or something, so ISPs may throttle or block traffic in that range.
