What exactly is your question. My wife handles the check book and finances and I'm in great shape and never have to worry about bills etc... I just get them from the mailbox and place them on the table in her spot, they get paid.

my wife likes handling the month to month bills, i do the long term stuff with retirement/refi's/insurance/taxes/etc.. and give her the yearly run down of our state of affairs in about 5 minutes. about 2 minutes in, her eyes glaze over and it's like college lectures again, you can tell she's listening but not paying attention anymore

On the serious side, I don't understand why people are having such a hard time with basic household finance.

It is very simple. You make x amount. Make sure you don't spend over x but x - (a number to be save for raining day). Not rocket science.

It's because the wife is an unknown equation. You might think you have x amount of money. That was before your wife's afternoon shopping trip. Days later you find out you actually only have y amount when you expected x amount.

Ever try to solve for x when x can be infinite? :biggrin:

My wife is terrible with finances and I sort out all our monthly bills (usually by direct debit because it's really easy that way). I wouldn't allow to have a credit card for a long time because she ran up lots of debt before we got together. She is better her own finances than she was, but I don't think she would have a clue even if I tried to teach her.

Honestly, I hit our bank site once or twice a month and check balances and such, and pay off my CC. Money is always good when I look there.

The story of the guy who let his wife handle the finances and wanted to know nothing about them sounds pretty damned stupid though. Letting your wife handle the finances is one thing, but not even looking at your money situation is another. It shouldn't be too hard to notice your wife coming home with new $500 outfits with $300 shoes, etc.

Long story short, one part of a couple may do the primary part of the finances, but both parts should keep an eye on things routinely. I know my wife is smart enough to do them, but I still have my own CC to pay off among other things.

Some of my bills its the only way I can pay them, or the only other options are cash or credit card (which they charge a $5 fee to use so fuck them they can open a letter). Believe me, I don't like writing checks.

This thread made me look again on a few things though and I see there are now direct withdraw options for a couple of my bills...although I'm not sure how excited I am about those either. I like having the go between buffer and 1% cashback of CC payments.

I never talk about money with my lady. If she wants to pay, she can pay. If she doesn't wanna pay, I pay. I don't see what the problem is. Most of the time, I just buy the stuff and bring it home so she doesn't have the option to pay for it. Ha!

I'm not saying I love checks, but debit cards are worthless instruments anyway. I see no benefit to using them for anything.
