What is with this ":cool;" thing to end sentences?

Can anyone tell me what this is all about? I've seen it pop up a lot lately and I have no idea why people are ending all their sentences with

You're displaying the forums in standard mode, right? the :[/i]cool; text will display as a smiley wearing sunglasses in enhanced mode
