What is with jocks???

I dunno... I'm a geek and I've always felt that they're just harmless idiots... like furry animals, cool to hang out with but can't do anything
real intelligent. Yes, I'm generalizing... there are a few smart jocks, very rare - but they're out there.

I'm 6'7" and played 4 years of H.S. and 3 years of College B.Ball (red shirt Frosh)
I also took every Math course offered in my H.S. and maintained a 3.8 G.P.A.
In college, I continued with my math (since all math has always been extremely easy for me) but ended up with a Bach. in C.S..

Yes, I also "picked on" some of the brainiacs whom were convinced all "jocks" were brain dead but I also had "brainiac" friends!
I also was extremely outgoing, (cracked up a LOT in class) voted most humorous in my class, and was student council president.

So see, your assumptions do not always hold true and as I found through talking with a wide variety of students, most of the time their disdain with "jocks" was envy of their popularity...........................

I was in the marching band so I was at EVERY game. I've had very good success with lines like "That was a real nice tackle on that kickoff return. Maybe if you weren't trying to grab his a$$ he wouldn't have returned that kick for a touchdown..."

They still haven't advanced much beyond their ape-like ancestry. You might notice how apes make aggressive and loud displays to assert their dominance. There are MANY similarities between this and the jocks being loud, and generally aggressive. I'm in college now, and the morons still are, well, morons. Except now they're more dangerous. They aren't aggressive in person; now they are behind the wheel of a car and are wreckless. The people drive like they are God on the road, and everyone will bow and duck out of their way.

I think something summed it up best about jocks; saw it in Esquire's Dubious Achievment awards:
A kid wrote a column for the high school newspaper about how football encourages violence. Next day the football team beat him up.
Point presented. Opposition comes and proves that there's truth to it.

hehe, yeah. For every a-hole jock in High school it's a safe bet that not one of them will ever amount to anything in his athletic field. One guy I remember used to be a real prick. A prick of pricks. King prick. I ran into him in Xmas of 2000 and it turned out that he had tried to make a go at dingy sailing and it all amounted to nothing. He was now back with his parents going to university doing some pissant worthless degree. Meanwhile his _younger_ brother who was an infinitely more approachable guy had already finished university and was in the process of getting a job. The sad thing is that the older brother still walked around like a 17 year old, full of himself ready to take on the world. He simply had not grown up since grade 10 and it was a sad sight.

When you get out of highschool (AND GO TO COLLEGE) you will escape most if not all of these characters. Instead they will manifest themselves as Fratboys. But most of the ones I've met are nice though, and do go out of their way to cause trouble for you.

In the future I'd avoid making sweeping generalizations like that. You're stooping down to their level by saying something that's equilvalent to them saying "all nerds are a waste of human being".

I'm not calling you a nerd, though. Just hang tough. High school is an incubator for extremely stupid individuals to grow in stupidity. In a few years it'll all be trivial.

you know..... i think they have to be like that in order to survive in their own social group... if they're not "cool" to their friends, they will probably be outcast.. (like the kicker..)

so whenever i see someone like that, be it a jock or not, i don't really get annoyed because i know that they are only doing that to be confident.

I played Football in high school.

In fact I was an offensive linesman, probably the biggest jocks of the lot of them.

I'm not a terribly offensive person, and I'm reasonably intelligent. And many others were to. We had our bad apples, but most were decent enough.

And I know plenty of people as obnoxious as you describe that haven't played any sports.

Be careful with your generalizations, and realize that no matter what you are doing, the bad ones always stick out the most.

You could have a class with one student with a perfect 4.0GPA who is a very nice guy, kind, gentle, considerate, et all, and one dumb ass prick.

Everyone will talk about the dumb as prick, not the good student. Positive distinction doesn't get noticed near as much as negative.

I dunno, I'm a pretty average kinda guy, who is pretty neutral on matters of jock vs nerd vs whatever.
But I find the pricks get alot more attention than the good students, they just seem to stick out much better.
