What is with DDR RAM?

I've been noodling around with building a new rig and am intrigued with the idea of a TBird 266/DDR setup. DDR looks great on paper and yet most benchmarking I've seen doesn't bear this out. Is it all hype or are applications just not memory-bandwidth intensive enough yet to take advantage of DDR?

I saw on Hardware-One (I think) that someone use MemTach and determined that DDR was 41% better/more efficient that SDR. Since H-1 seems to be down for me, I can't find the real link right now.

From what I understand the new DDR systems were really hyped up and people were excited until the KT133a. Then according to some benchmarks you could get similar speeds using your old SDRAM rather than having to get the more expensive DDR and a motherboard that would support it.

Course that was a while ago. Not sure how things stand now.

well the Palamino (sp?) is really supposed to take more advantage then the older chips (t-bird)..

i doubt the increase is HUGE.. but i would think about 15-20 %.. thats just a guess..

but if you are going to get a new rig.. you mind as well get DDR.. becasue it future proof's your machine some.. and plus.. It can't be worse.. 🙂 🙂
