What is Windows 7 compatible?

When checking on the Microsoft web site if my system can handle Windows 7 only annoyance given is that my "current graphics adapter won't support Windows Aero user interface........" My graphics card is a MSI NVIDIA 8400 GeForce w/ 512Mb PCIX. I thought such would handle Win 7. What should i get?

That can't be right. I would have imagined the GeForce 8400 would be able to run ok on Win7. I'd probably just try installing Win7 and see if that works or not first before getting another graphics card. I really don't see how the gf8400 wouldnt be sufficient for Win7.

I should also mention you should get the most up to date driver for your graphics card..

Sounds like something messed up. I have installed Win7 on 3 years old Dell laptops using Intels integrated garbage just fine.

I have it on a net book as well.. It just may not support Aero... cool, but nothing that will really change your life.

It's based on the resolution of your monitor what VRAM you need for aero. 512 should be fine for anything though. I think they're smoking crack

Running it on a 5600XT and it did Aero, but not very well. Kinda jerky. I finally turned it off. Still looks good.

Off topic but simply had to remark:

um, mr voodoo 5, you might want to read up on some current technology. 😉

I thought, what?, 'Mr Voodoo 5'? Then I read BillB2's signature and burst out laughing. It's a good thing I wasn't drinking anything at the time.

Fairly sure I've got a 440BX board somewhere with an overclocked Celeron. I should check whether it still boots.

I've got a 256MB 8400GS on my Dell M1530 and it runs Aero perfectly. No stuttering when drag and dropping windows or the new layered scrolling feature. Just make sure you install the latest drivers from nvidia.

Hey now! I have a soft-spot for my laptop's X3100. Why all the hate?
