It's distilled from lots of things...potatoes is actually used less than the typical grain...there's also one (at least one that I know of) called 3 that's distilled from soy...that sh*t was smooth, not bad at all.

Other than that, it's the distillation differences, etc. which make the different vodkas.

here is some \\Black Vodka,
http://www.blavod.com/frames/vodkaframe.htmABOUT BLACK VODKA

Why?

Mark Dorman was working in San Francisco when he was offered a choice of 28 vodkas in a bar... and then he was asked if he wanted his coffee black or white. He thought it would be a great idea to offer drinkers a black vodka.

How?

The colour of the vodka is changed by adding catechu, a herb found in southern Asia and central and east Africa.. Rich in tannin, catechu has no effect on vodka's flavour. However, many say it makes the vodka a little smoother. To find out more about catechu, have a look here... and here...

although many different raw materials can be used for \vodka;
experts agree that the preferred vodka base is wheat
because it yields the least amount of impurities.
Because of this the \Nolet Distillery has always carefully selected
the finest wheat to be used for Ketel One Vodka.

They don't ADD ethanol to it.

Taters are fermented with yeast and sugar. The vodka is distilled off the vapors of this mass of rotting muck.

Basic process.

Most all vodka sold in the U.S. is distilled from grain. In fact, I only know of one company (and it's in Idaho of course) that manufactures potato vodka in the US.

You can sometimes find potato vodka in better liquor stores but you have to hunt for it.

Aside from the ethanol, ideally vodka has nothing but water in it. Realistically you will get some ketones and a few trace acids; the more ketones and acids the less "smooth" it is.

Contrary to what the "experts" on the Ketel One site say, some of the best vodka comes from potatoes, not wheat. (though to be fair a particular type of relatively flavorless potato) Why? Because potatoes are mostly nothing but starch, i.e. carbohydrates, i.e. something that ferments well. Since it's (almost) all pure starch the amount of ketones and other things produced is low.

each vodka can vary.

My favourite currently is belvedere from poland, a rye vodka.

For a cheaper drink, stoli does the trick.
