VIVO generally has a Y-Cable adapter which has Svideo in and out on it. Also VIVO is generally on more expensive video cards.

pretty sure the port on a vivo card is not S-video. You will need the Y cable for that.

-------------------S-Video In
port - Y cable -
-------------------S-Video Out

Quick question here.... I am undecided what video card to purchase (I have been recommended an ATI all-in-wonder) as I am keen to do video editing so require a good performing card. I have a JVC mini-dv camcorder and a firewire input on the computer. I was also not familiar with the term ViVo on video cards, if I purchase a card with ViVo will I be able to get a lead to connect the camcorder s-video out to the video-in on the video card? Or am I going down the wrong road of thinking?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

WRONG ROAD, you need a firewire/ 1394 card to import DV you could use svideo but don't. video matters little for editing CPU anf a fire wire card.

what would the video-in on a video card be used for then, connecting a tv or video recorder maybe?
I do use a firewire card at the moment, just thought a better graphics card might improve frame rate etc etc.

A better graphics card wont help, those tasks are CPU and Hard Drive bound.

Note: a larger hard drive wont help either, a FASTER hard drive or running RAID0 or RAID5 can.

Using firewire just transfers a copy of the video from your DV cam to your hardrive. You shouldn't be dropping any frames as the bitrate for DV is pretty low. Analog capture will be a reduction in quality.

What exactly does VIVO allow you to do? Graphics cards with VIVO are slightly more expensive then those without it. Just curious to know exactly what VIVO will do/allow you to do.

Cheers.

P.S. I know what it stands for :)

Video In/Video Out. Its not a TV tuner. So you can bring video into your PC (from a VCR, DVD player, etc) or display video out (to a TV, VCR, etc). Most people don't need VIVO. Unless you wanted to do something like transfer VHS to DVD, or use your monitor as a Display for a VCR or DVD player, theres no real need for it Video In. The common use for video out is for displaying images that are on your monitor to a TV. Good for home theater setups, and people who like to play their PC games on a big TV.

For video in there is no mechanism for switching channels, so you shouldnt think of it as a TV tuner, unless you visualize it as a TV tuner with only one channel.

- yep this is what VIVO means!! BTW, for the video out(S-video), all i have to do is just plug it in the TV's video in(S-video) then i can use it as my monitor already? just like that or i may have to re-configure or need anything else? the thing is, i havent tried my video out on a TV yet...

You will most likely have to configure your Video Adapter to display to the TV. From the Video Adapter's perspective, its just another monitor. Its fairly easy to do with Nvidia and ATI video cards. Usually click on button to detect displays and select whether you want to mirror or span the new monitor.
